Severe weather warning: Heavy thunderstorms and storms in Bernau from today!

On the afternoon of June 26, 2025, Cologne residents should be prepared for a lot! The German Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning warning of severe thunderstorms in Bernau and Barnim. From 5 p.m. there is a risk of not only gusts of wind of up to 110 km/h, but also heavy rainfall with up to 30 liters of rain per square meter in one hour. Hail up to 2cm in diameter could also fall. Bernau Live also reports that the main danger comes from hurricane-like gusts that could knock over branches and entire trees.

There is an urgent recommendation for everyone who likes to spend time outdoors: avoid spending time in parks and forests. Driving should be avoided if possible, particularly on country roads, as fallen trees could pose a significant risk. The previous Monday, a storm had already swept across Berlin and Brandenburg, which led to numerous fire brigade operations and a 12-hour disruption to S-Bahn traffic.

Heavy thunderstorms approaching

According to a current warning from the German Weather Service, the weather situation applies to the whole day and is caused by an Atlantic low-level extension that is bringing thunderstorm-prone air over Germany. The thunderstorms had already started in the west in the morning and the thunderstorms are expected to intensify from midday onwards. The effects will be particularly noticeable in southern Lower Saxony, East Westphalia and Hesse in the afternoon and evening towards Saxony and Brandenburg. [DWD].

A second thunderstorm focus is expected for the Allgäu, where strong thunderstorms with similar conditions will also occur. The severe weather forecasts indicate hail of up to 4 cm and heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter. The risk of severe weather is therefore very high and caution should be exercised.

Severe weather warning system and 24-hour information

Anyone who would like to find out about the current weather situation and possible severe weather warnings can always access the extensive information from the Unwetterzentrale. Both advance warnings and acute warnings are given, which are categorized into three warning levels: orange for moderate storms, red for severe storms and purple for extreme storms. This gives citizens the opportunity to adapt to changes in a timely manner.

So, dear people of Cologne, stay vigilant and stay informed! The weather god doesn't mean well today and demands that we treat the elements with respect.
