Beaver boom in Brandenburg: population over 4,000 and increasing conflicts!
In Brandenburg the beaver population is becoming ever larger. According to all reports, the population has grown to over 4,000 animals, a number that the State Office for the Environment (LfU) estimates puts it at between 4,000 and 4,200 animals. Compared to the previous year, when there were around 3,700 beavers, the number has increased significantly. The nimble rodents are now present in almost all areas of the country and are increasingly making their presence felt.
The dynamics of the beavers are remarkable. Migrations from dry streams coincide with a return to periods of normalized water balance, demonstrating their adaptability. But not everyone in Brandenburg is happy about the return of the beavers. The Ministry of the Environment has already pointed out that there are challenges for human fellow citizens when living together with these animals. Damage to gardens, flooded areas and disruption to infrastructure are just some of the problems that lead to conflict.
Attentive nature conservation management
Nevertheless, the increase in the beaver population is seen as a success of nature conservation. There is an active beaver management, which is supported by the beaver representatives in the state. These are responsible as contact persons for those affected, authorities and water maintenance associations. Its goal is to defuse conflicts, offer solutions and provide information about funding opportunities.
The ministry has drawn up a 7-point program that is intended to reconcile the various interests - from nature conservation to flood protection. Particular attention is paid to the Beaver Ordinance, which provides for exceptions to avert danger by deterring and removing beavers when it comes to dams and flood protection systems.
Deterrence measures and shootings
In recent years the situation has worsened. In 2023, almost 900 deterrence measures were carried out, a new high. Although the number of kills fell from 162 to 141 in 2024, the behavior of beavers remains a topic that concerns many people. Land users and water conservation groups continue to raise concerns about the damage the animals can cause.
The beaver population in Brandenburg appears to have stabilized recently, with an estimate of a maximum of 3,700 animals. The beaver is no longer just a secret resident of the waters, but shows how important respectful coexistence between nature and people is. Appointed beaver representatives are available to promote exchanges and find solutions acceptable to both sides.
The beaver's success story makes it clear that active nature conservation and dealing with the challenges of living together with these animals are essential issues. Meanwhile, Brandenburg has positioned itself well to meet the needs of nature conservation, agriculture and citizens – a truly Herculean task.
