The ministry has drawn up a 7-point program that is intended to reconcile the various interests - from nature conservation to flood protection. Particular attention is paid to the Beaver Ordinance, which provides for exceptions to avert danger by deterring and removing beavers when it comes to dams and flood protection systems.

Deterrence measures and shootings

In recent years the situation has worsened. In 2023, almost 900 deterrence measures were carried out, a new high. Although the number of kills fell from 162 to 141 in 2024, the behavior of beavers remains a topic that concerns many people. Land users and water conservation groups continue to raise concerns about the damage the animals can cause.

The beaver population in Brandenburg appears to have stabilized recently, with an estimate of a maximum of 3,700 animals. The beaver is no longer just a secret resident of the waters, but shows how important respectful coexistence between nature and people is. Appointed beaver representatives are available to promote exchanges and find solutions acceptable to both sides.
