Wust railway crossing: 30 km diversion for trucks by 2027!

Everything in beautiful Brandenburg is currently on its feet, because a lot of things are going to change at the level crossing in Wust. The construction work, which began on September 29, 2023, is aimed not only at ensuring operational safety, but also at improving the infrastructure in the region. Loud MAZ Online The work will last until April 30, 2027 and will be ordered by the Federal Railway Authority in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn AG.

What can residents and road users expect? If the level crossing is completely closed, citizens will have to prepare for a significant diversion. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are excluded from passage and have to accept a 27.7 kilometer detour via the B102 and L88 roads as well as the L86. The only exceptions are the buses of the Regiobus Potsdam-Mittelmark and the Verkehrsbetriebe Brandenburg an der Havel (VBBr), which are still allowed to use the level crossing.

Details about the construction work

During the course of the construction work, an extensive package will be put together: the existing fastening will be removed over a large area and 40 track panels and rubber profiles will be replaced. This was initiated on behalf of Deutsche Bahn AG and following instructions from the Federal Railway Authority in order to ensure the safety of the Berlin-Magdeburg railway line. These measures are not an easy undertaking - the construction work resulted from a previous tender by the State Road Agency (LS). Brandenburg Live reported.

The level crossing is closed at night and can only be used by pedestrians, cyclists and buses from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Road users play it safe at the Lehnin motorway junction, as traffic lights are being regulated there due to the construction work.

Preparation and time overview

What is behind the long-term project? In order to optimize traffic flow, four temporary bypasses as well as two turning systems and a cycle path will be set up in advance. The construction will take place in a total of four sections and begins at the Neuschreike exit to the B1/Wuster Straße junction. The bridge overpass has been in place since autumn 2023, while work on the entrances and exits and the new route will only be completed in two years.

An unexpected setback was the delay caused by an error in the tender. Therefore, the lots for “track” and “noise barriers” had to be put out to tender again, which threw the entire schedule into disarray. Even if the current work is designed for use of the level crossing until 4:00 p.m. until March 27, 2025, there remains hope that the projects will be completed quickly.
