Basketball for girls: MOVE Girls Day awakens enthusiasm in Brandenburg!

Basketball is growing in popularity, especially among girls. The coach Lea Werder leads a dedicated girls' basketball group and has two coaching licenses. In her training, which she organizes together with Stephan Buhtz, the enthusiastic players not only learn the technique of the game, but also promote motor skills and social skills. There are currently around ten girls active, but the space in the group could easily be doubled to give even more young athletes the opportunity to enjoy basketball. In the future, the group plans to set up its own girls' team, which will take part in mini-tournaments and later in league competitions at the U12 and U14 level. Meetingpoint Brandenburg reports that basketball is not only a team sport, but also activates the hemispheres of the brain and thus promotes development. Mike-König Lehmann, trainer at Baskets Brandenburg, underlines this aspect and sees the training as a platform for communication, support and respectful interaction among the girls.

Another sign of the boom in girls basketball is the one to comeMOVE Girls Day, which will take place on July 21, 2025 in the Dreifelderhalle Marienberg. This day, organized by Baskets Brandenburg and the Brandenburg Basketball Association, offers young athletes in grades 1 to 4 the opportunity to discover basketball in a playful way. The focus is on fun: the varied program includes trial sessions, team and cooperation games as well as small surprises and giveaways. Admission to this event is free and regardless of previous experience - everyone is welcome to discover the joy of movement. According to SSB Brandenburg, the event is intended to help strengthen the girls' self-confidence and make new friends. The day starts at 12:30 p.m. for the 1st and 2nd grades, while the 3rd and 4th grades start their activities at 1:00 p.m.

Growing importance in girls' basketball

The positive response to basketball offerings for girls shows that a need for such sports has become established. However, in many regions there is still a lack of appropriate opportunities for young women to get active and play basketball. The German Basketball Federation has reacted and is focusing on special projects such as “Come on girls – Let’s play BASKETBALL” and the publication of new teaching materials in order to further promote the potential in this area. Initiatives such as girls camps and special events help to appeal to both performance-oriented female athletes and the broad masses of young people interested in basketball. It becomes clear that basketball for girls is not just a sport, but also an important space for personal and social development.

With the passion of coaches like Lea Werder and a growing offering for girls, basketball will certainly continue to gain in importance and invite more and more young female athletes to get to know this exciting team sport.
