CDU demand: Brandenburg's communities need a cybersecurity emergency plan!

In Brandenburg, pressure is growing on the state government to finally draw up a clear emergency plan for cybersecurity in the municipalities. The CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament has now launched a comprehensive initiative to improve protection against increasing cyber threats. The background is the recent attacks on cities such as Potsdam, Brandenburg an der Havel and Hoppegarten, which have shown how vulnerable public institutions actually are. Rainer Genilke, the CDU's domestic policy spokesman, calls for clear action steps and immediate measures in the event of an emergency in order to better protect not only citizens, but also critical infrastructure such as schools, daycare centers and administrations. According to Tixio, protection against such threats is a central concern of the parliamentary group.

But what exactly does this new initiative entail? The CDU proposes the establishment of a cybersecurity institute in Brandenburg in order to pool resources and specialists. A small inquiry to the state government shows that serious steps are planned here. The state government itself refers to a new cybersecurity strategy that is currently being coordinated in order to make the requirements even more specific.

Current information security requirements

The need for a solid security framework is also supported by the state administration's updated information security guidelines. Bravors revised this in 2024. It applies to all government bodies, from the State Chancellery to courts and correctional facilities. The guideline is intended to ensure that business processes are supported by IT and that the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information is maintained.

It is important that all employees are actively involved in the security process in order to create a strong awareness of their own role in security management. In addition, there is the responsibility of the department heads who are directly responsible for information security in their areas.

Cyber attacks: A serious risk

However, the threats go beyond internal security policies. University of BW states in a current research project that cyber attacks, especially on critical infrastructure, are associated with enormous costs and can have far-reaching consequences. These attacks are not just a problem for the financial sector or communications networks, but could endanger society as a whole. The project examines the different legal frameworks of cybersecurity in both the US and the EU and aims to compare the different approaches and identify possible gaps.

At a time when digitalization is advancing, the need to proactively deal with cyber threats is becoming more and more obvious. The CDU initiative could therefore send an important signal and shows clearly: There is something going on! Brandenburg must act now to ensure the safety of its citizens and public institutions.
