Bat Night in Krugpark: Discover the secrets while flying!

There will be great excitement among nature lovers in the coming weeks as International Bat Night is just around the corner! On Friday, September 12, 2025, visitors to the Krugpark nature conservation center in Brandenburg an der Havel can experience an exciting exploration of the nocturnal flying artists. Same opportunity, same goal: Education and protection of bats are the focus of this event, which is also organized by the NABU Brandenburg/Havel regional association. As stadt-brandenburg.de reports, the event lasts from 7:00 p.m. to around 10:00 p.m.

Participants can look forward to an educational time in the environmental pyramid, where they will learn more about the way of life and hunting behavior of bats. It gets particularly exciting when observing these animals with a bat detector during their hunting and orientation flights. Dr. Beatrix Wuntke, an experienced qualified biologist from NABU, will welcome the guests at the Sandfurthgraben and identify, weigh and measure the captured animals. A real highlight for anyone interested in the mysterious world of bats!

Important information about the event

To ensure that everything goes smoothly, advance registration is required. Interested parties can register up to the maximum number of participants by calling (03381) 58 31 60 or by email at krugpark@stadt-brandenburg.de. Please note that weather-appropriate clothing and a flashlight are recommended in order to be optimally prepared for nighttime exploration. If you don't want to miss out on taking part, you should act quickly as places are limited.

Bats in danger

Why is education about these fascinating animals so important? There are 25 different species of bats known in Germany, and none of them feed on blood. They are pure insectivores, but their population is seriously threatened. Many are forgoing their natural habitats due to habitat destruction and the death of insects. According to nabu.de, four species are acutely threatened with extinction and three species are considered critically endangered. This makes the Bat Night events all the more relevant: knowledge about the risks and the importance of a natural balance is conveyed here.

The aim of this international bat night, which takes place simultaneously in 38 countries, is not only to have fun, but above all to protect these animals. Tips are given for designing insect- and bat-friendly gardens so that visitors can actively contribute to the conservation of the species.

The Big Picture: The Bat Atlas

In addition to the events, the BATLAS project, in which the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation is involved, will continue to work on collecting and evaluating long-term data on bats. The Bat Atlas aims to provide reliable data on population sizes and their trends. Particularly important because the data is currently often not centralized and a lot of information is lost. Monitoring stocks is crucial in order to be able to react to negative developments in a timely manner.

The nights belong to the bats and one thing is certain for us: it is time to bring these secret but fascinating creatures out of the darkness and into the light. Be there and experience the international bat night up close!
