Progress in district heating: 130 meters laid, 180 in view!

In Cologne, something is happening in energy supply: around 130 meters of district heating have already been laid, and a total of 180 meters are on the plan. The connection point for the existing district heating line in the wall promenade is occupied for the connection in October, which requires a temporary closure of Wallstrasse to ensure smooth crossing. But don't worry, after the blocking, the work on the adjacent green area remains undisturbed, reports the construction supervisor of the Stadtwerke, Andreas Stein, who is extremely satisfied with the progress in the project. The good cooperation between Bau Müller, the Bisp civil engineering company and the Archaeologists from the PMP company contributes significantly to success. In fact, the laying work has even been completed before the schedule, so that the responsible Society for Infrastructure Planning Brandenburg (GIP) with their team of five employees, including four engineers, does excellent work.

But that's just a part of a larger picture. Investments in district heating are not only limited to Cologne, but also reflect a comprehensive trend. Berliner Energie und Wärme GmbH (Bew) is planning investments of around 3.3 billion euros by 2030. The majority of this sum should be financed through loans, with a high equity ratio of around 50% hope for good conditions on the debt capital market. A third of the investment amount is already secured, while the conversion of the Reuter West heating power plant is in full swing to renewable energies.

heating networks in focus

A sustainable renovation of district heating is crucial for the achievement of the climate goals. As the AGFW emphasizes, efficient, greenhouse gas -neutral heat networks play a central role in the decarbonization of heat supply. The dependence on fossil fuels, as disclosed by the Ukraine conflict, shows how urgently a rethink is necessary. Within the next 20 years, fossil fuels must be replaced by renewable sources. The expansion of heating networks enables the heat requirement to cover the heat from renewable sources without having to deal with every household with its own heating.

Cologne can therefore look forward to a future, not only a decisive contribution to the care of municipalities in which heating networks not only make a decisive contribution to the environmental challenges of our time. By 2045, the number of buildings connected to heating networks is to be tripled, with at least 100,000 new connections annually. The way there is clear: a reliable framework for providers and consumers, investment incentives and the reduction of obstacles are just as necessary as the support from a changed legal environment.

The progress in the Cologne district heating project is therefore not only a locally important project, but a small component in a pioneering process for climate -neutral heat supply across Germany. It will be interesting to see how these developments will develop in the coming years.
