Art funding in Brandenburg: Honor for Prof. Karg in St. Jakobskapelle

On July 16, 2025, the St. Jakobskapelle in Brandenburg an der Havel was the scene of a special honor that, above all, made the city's art and culture scene shine. Prime Minister Dr. Dietmar Woidke awarded Prof. Dr. Detlef Karg received the Order of Merit of the State of Brandenburg for his outstanding services as curator of the Wredow Drawing School Foundation. Karg served in this role from October 2013 to December 2022 and worked tirelessly to promote monuments and art.

Mayor Steffen Scheller took the opportunity to recognize Karg's remarkable contribution to the development of art in the region. The Order of Merit is a well-deserved recognition for someone who played a key role in the further development of the Wredow School of Drawing by turning a historical institution into a modern art school. This is a real success model that not only employs 15 dedicated lecturers, but also promotes artistic talent from children to adults.

A vibrant art center

As the Wredow Art School shows, the focus here is on training artists of all ages. The training goals are impressive: the original artistic talents should not only be preserved, but also promoted, which is of great importance for a vibrant society. The Wredow Foundation offers an extensive range of courses aimed at children, young people and adults in order to develop skills in the various areas of artistic design.

The main focuses of the training include the basics of drawing, color theory and photography. Participants have the opportunity to learn both technical crafts and creative forms of expression, from nature studies to free compositions.

Art as a collective work

The honoring of Prof. Karg took place as part of the annual Wredow Week, which runs from July 14th to 18th, 2025 and presents the great achievements of the art students. This also includes the large annual exhibition in the Wredow House, which opens on July 17, 2025 at 3:30 p.m. This will then be open to the public until August 15, 2025.

But that's not all: On July 18th, the Wredow Art Prize will be awarded in the St. Jakobskapelle - an important moment that celebrates and honors the commitment of artists in the region. It is particularly worth mentioning that Karg not only promoted the development of the art school, but was also involved in the scientific debate with the famous Prof. August Julius Wredow. He published several publications and clarified the origin of the important historical Wredow art collection, which includes around 40,000 works of art.

Thanks to Karg's commitment, an archive was set up in the Wredow House to preserve these precious treasures of art history. The director of the Wredow Art School, Tobias Oechsle, praised Karg's invaluable contributions to the city's art and cultural development and emphasized that his influence in the region will also be felt in the long term.

Promoting the cultural scene

In Brandenburg you can't talk about supporting the arts without mentioning the Kulturland Brandenburg initiative. This supports projects in the cultural scene with up to 50% of the total costs and helps the community to flourish creatively in its diversity. Own and third-party funds play an important role and make it easier for project sponsors to put their ideas into practice without necessarily having to rely on high amounts of their own funds ( society-culture-history ).

In this way, the Wredow Drawing School combines the potential of young and older artists and ensures that Brandenburg's cultural landscape remains lively and diverse. It remains exciting to see what creative ideas and projects will emerge from this inspiring environment next!
