Plauer Straße is open again! Traffic on the rise after closure!
Finally there is good news from Brandenburg: The complete closure of Plauer Strasse and Ritterstrasse, which has been bothering residents and commuting road users since May 5, 2025, has now been lifted. Mayor Steffen Scheller announced the opening of the street space to traffic. This means that citizens can use their usual routes again and the tram service can once again fully serve the ring route through the new and old towns stadt-brandenburg.de reported.
The work on the tracks, which took place in the narrowest track curve in Brandenburg, had become necessary due to the heavy load and wear and tear. Now the first tram is back on Hauptstrasse, Ritterstrasse and Plauer Strasse. The last barriers have also been removed and the one-way street regulations on Bäckerstrasse and Bergstrasse are expiring. This noticeably improves the flow of traffic.
Investments and improvements
In total, the Brandenburg transport company (VBBr) invested around 100,000 euros, while the municipal utilities invested around 450,000 euros for extensive renovations. This also included 50,000 euros for the connection of crossing aids. These measures are part of the project to ensure improved infrastructure and safety, especially for cyclists. “We have shown a good hand in the paving work and have significantly improved the road conditions,” said a spokesman for the municipal utilities.
The municipal utilities are also pushing ahead with the expansion of the district heating network, with new pipelines that will be laid by October 2025. Remaining work on the sidewalk area, including the relocation of a bus stop and a street light, is expected to be completed next week. These targeted measures demonstrate the city's commitment to a modern and sustainable transport infrastructure.
The big picture: mobility transition in the city
But that's not all! The challenges of the mobility transition are on everyone’s lips. Urban development also plays a crucial role in Brandenburg. bmv.de emphasizes that municipal actors are asked to implement new mobility concepts. Citizens should be encouraged to leave their cars at home more often and switch to alternative means of transport.
The goal is clear: less motorized private traffic and more pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Innovative projects such as NaMIx evaluate the sustainability of mobility in neighborhoods and help to increase the quality of living. And the use of autonomous means of transport could also significantly improve rural public transport options. Cities must plan well-informed in order to make mobility sustainable.
In summary, it can be said that the measures in Brandenburg are a step in the right direction. The city shows that it wants to create a modern transport infrastructure system that meets both the needs of residents and the environment. An interesting project for the future where everyone can actively contribute to the mobility transition!
