a price for freedom
The Brandenburg Freedom Award was first awarded in 2016 on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of the foundation stone of the cathedral. The history of the cathedral itself is not only architecturally impressive, but also has an important political history. This place has experienced different social upheavals over the centuries, be it during the revolution of 1848, in the period of National Socialism or the GDR. It is a symbol of the idea of freedom and the constant examination of the questions of freedom and justice.
The Brandenburg Freedom Award promotes the idea of freedom and recognizes people or institutions who are strong in culture, religion, economy or politics for the use of freedom and fundamental rights. As can be found on the Wikipedia page, the prize jury consists of volunteers who act independently and concentrate on the submission of proposals. The price lives from the variety of perspectives that can shape freedom in our society.
In recent years, the Brandenburg Freedom Award has already been awarded to various award winners, such as the Cottbus human rights center in 2016 and Algorithmwatch in 2023. Such awards illustrate how current and complex the topic of freedom is today. It is clear that freedom is a universal need that plays a role in different areas of life. For this reason, at every award ceremony it is reconsidered what freedom means for society.
The commitment of "Basic Law Understanding" will certainly be a valuable enrichment for the discussion about how we can continue to stand up for people's rights and freedoms in the future. It remains exciting to observe which impulses will emerge from the award ceremony in October.
