Brandenburg Patke Winery: An insider tip for wine lovers!

The wine-growing culture in Brandenburg is flourishing - and not just in a figurative sense. The trend is clearly towards sustainable and resilient grape varieties. A beacon of this movement is the Patke winery, which has made impressive developments since it was founded in 2016 by Matthias Jahnke. With an area of ​​almost five hectares, the winery offers a variety of wines that focus on high quality and regional conditions. His best-known drops are the Pinot Blanc “S” from 2023, which is available for 15 euros, as well as the popular Pinot Iskra from 2024 for 14.50 euros and the Souvignier Gris from 2024, which is available for 12.90 euros. A Riesling A from 2023, which is aged in amphoras and impresses with its complex aromas, also highlights the region's demand for quality wine.

But the Patke winery is not just a retreat for wine lovers. The farm shop also offers regional delicacies such as salami, cheese and strawberry liqueur. A special invitation to visitors: The next wine festivals will take place on September 20th and 21st, which not only put the enjoyment of wine in the spotlight, but also celebrate the connection to the region.

Frost and drought as challenges

However, the challenges in viticulture should not be underestimated. As experts from Agrar.de emphasize, extreme weather conditions such as late frosts, heat waves and heavy rain make life difficult for winegrowers. These factors not only endanger the vines, but also put future production in question. While the broader growing seasons caused by climate change can bring positive effects, such as earlier flowering, they also increase the risk of damage from frost.

To counteract such challenges, fungus-resistant grape varieties, also known as PiWi, are becoming increasingly important. These hardy varieties offer protection against diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew, which are favored by moist conditions. In Brandenburg, the current wine-growing area is growing to around 33 hectares and the goal is clear: to establish a climate-tolerant range of grape varieties in the “Vitis BB” project.

Research and innovation for the future

The project, which will run from 2025 to 2028, has an impressive funding amount of 1,432,451 euros available for applied research. It focuses on the tropical and frost tolerance of modern PiWi vines and is intended to secure the long-term future of viticulture in Brandenburg. The planned expansion of Patke's cultivation area to 15 to 18 hectares fits perfectly with these future-oriented approaches.

Brandenburg not only faces a challenge, but could also develop into a pioneer in German winegrowing. The focus on innovative cultivation techniques and refreshing the traditional grape variety range is the key to successful adaptation to climate change and ensuring sustainable wine production in the region. With a good handle on the demands of the climate, the winemakers here could soon produce even more valuable wines and give Berlin, the beer stronghold, some wine flair.
