Cottbus is relying on the digital future: new parking guidance system is coming in November!
Cottbus is about to take a significant step in urban development. In November 2025, the city will install a new digital display board for the parking guidance system, which should make parking in the city center much easier. This innovative technology will be located on Karl-Marx-Straße, near the Information, Communication and Media Center (IKMZ). The new system replaces an old scoreboard that was dismantled due to spare parts no longer being available.
The existing park guidance system has its roots in the Federal Garden Show (BUGA), which was held 35 years ago. “It was high time we relied on modern technology,” explains a city representative. The new display board will not only display up-to-date information on five central parking garages, but will also result in lower electricity and maintenance costs, reducing the burden on the city's budget.
Benefits of modernization
Visitors and residents can look forward to much clearer and less stressful parking. The new display board allows multiple parking options to be displayed at the same time, making it easier to find free parking spaces. This could ensure that the annoying traffic looking for parking in the city center is significantly reduced. As is known from various studies, this leads to both increased traffic volume and higher emissions - a problem that affects many cities, not just Cottbus.
Signalservice Cottbus GmbH will carry out this conversion without any disruption to road traffic. The total costs of the measure amount to around 36,000 euros, which are financed entirely from city funds.
A look beyond the city limits
The challenge of finding a parking space is not just an issue in Cottbus. In many cities, including Aalen, an intelligent parking management system is increasingly being introduced to help drivers find free parking spaces in a timely manner. These systems use modern sensors and dynamic guidance systems to minimize congestion and emissions. In Aalen, for example, the goal is to also reduce the traffic looking for parking and thus improve the quality of life in the city center.
Cottbus is well on its way to achieving similar progress. The upcoming installation of the new display board will be an important step towards smarter and more environmentally conscious urban planning. The modernization of the parking guidance system is not only a benefit for the users, but also for the entire city environment, which will benefit from less traffic and lower emissions.
