Cottbus is starting a unique dual bachelor’s degree in music!

Something is happening in the area of music education in Cottbus! On November 4, 2025, Mayor Tobias Schick and Vice President Prof. Dr. Peer Schmidt signed an important contract at the Cottbus Conservatory to introduce the first dual study program for instrumental and vocal pedagogy at the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). This is a real novelty in Germany.

The new study model starts in the winter semester of 2026/27 and offers an exciting opportunity for young talent to combine their musical talent with pedagogical knowledge. As part of a pilot project, two practical places will initially be made available. The advertisements for these places will take place in November 2025, and due to the high demand for specialists in music schools, great interest in this offer is expected beyond Cottbus and the region.

Study content and structure

The bachelor's degree program lasts eight semesters and covers various genres of music: from classical to jazz and rock to elementary music education. Students have the opportunity to focus on main and secondary instruments or singing and learn how to pass on their knowledge effectively. A special feature of the dual course of study is the close connection between theory and practice, which secures monthly income for prospective music educators.

Another advantage is the training at two learning locations: at a music school, where practice-oriented content is taught, and at the university, which is responsible for the theoretical courses. The prerequisite for admission to the program is a general university entrance qualification, a study contract with a cooperation partner and passing an aptitude test.

Future prospects for graduates

Graduates of the new Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) are ideally qualified for various areas: be it for music schools, cultural education programs, independent music projects or even for self-employment. This means that the course offering is not only a benefit for the students, but also for the entire cultural scene in the region and beyond.

Like all music education in Germany, the new dual study program at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg will certainly bring a breath of fresh air into the industry. We can only hope that many talented young people will be enthusiastic about this unique offer.
