On Sunday evening, June 20, 2025, the starting signal for a new DFB Cup season will be given. The first round draw took place at 5:50 p.m. and produced some exciting pairings. All eyes are on the big teams, but the amateurs are also hoping for their big moment. FC Bayern Munich is heading to Hesse for an away game against third division team SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
In the NRW duel, Borussia Dortmund will face Rot-Weiss Essen, while the reigning cup winners VfB Stuttgart will face Eintracht Braunschweig. These first matches will be played from August 15th to 18th, 2025 and promise football entertainment of the highest quality.

The participating teams are made up of a diverse mix. In addition to the big clubs in the first Bundesliga, there are also 18 Bundesliga teams and 14 best-placed teams in the 2nd Bundesliga. The clubs in the amateur pool, including Preußen Münster, Dynamo Dresden and Hansa Rostock, are eager to compete against well-known opponents.

The “Final Day of the Amateurs” determined the 64 participants in the first round of the 2025/2026 DFB Cup. The lowest-placed professional teams from the 2nd Bundesliga and the strongest third division teams compete here. The amateurs have home advantage in this round, which promises exciting equal opportunities.
It may also be interesting for fans to know that the first games in each federal state have differences. North Rhine-Westphalia has the largest representation with 14 teams, while Thuringia and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania compete with only one team each.
