Energie Cottbus is pushing for stadium modernization: This is how it should continue!

Energie Cottbus is hot on the rise! For the second year in a row, the club from Lausitz is aiming to make it to the 2nd Bundesliga and is placing particular focus on the modernization of the local LEAG Energie Stadium. The pressure to persuade political decision-makers to act is growing because time is of the essence. There have been no significant structural changes to the stadium in the last two decades, and there is an urgent need to change that now. “We have concepts and ideas, but we need the decisions for the infrastructure,” emphasizes President Sebastian Lemke.

The importance of this modernization is not only reflected in the sporting ambition of the team, which has been a top team in the 3rd league for the fourth season in a row under coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz. The fact that funding is available for the former lignite region of Lausitz could represent a golden opportunity. It is important not to go away empty-handed from the federal program STARK (strengthening transformation dynamics), because the chances are good of getting some business here.

Urgency and new visions

“There’s something going on” – people in Cottbus are aware of the urgency of stadium modernization. However, a feasibility study that was decided in January 2025 has not yet been implemented. Energie Cottbus is all the more eager to show what we imagine. The club has already presented initial proposals for the renovation with the aim of creating a multifunctional arena. It is important to know that the visualization of the renovation only serves as an example image and is not a finished planning draft.

Expanding the audience capacity beyond 22,500 seats is not a priority. Rather, it is about a visual and functional upgrade of the stadium, which will secure the location for professional football in Cottbus in the long term. Lemke and his team are confident that they will move forward with the right concept and the necessary support.

Overall, the Energie Cottbus association offers an exciting perspective. The combination of sporting success and the vision to improve the infrastructure could not only advance the club, but also the entire region. The hands of the clock are ticking and the promotion is in the balance - now it's time to cross your fingers and hope that the right decisions are made!
