Lausitz discovers geothermal energy: Geothermal energy project starts in July!
A lot is happening in Lusatia when it comes to using geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source. There is currently a lot of work being done between Cottbus and Guben to explore hot, water-bearing layers. The Radiolausitz reported that the State Office for Mining, Geology and Raw Materials (LBGR) was commissioned with this work. An exciting perspective that could open up for municipalities and industry!
Planned investigations will start in July 2025. A geological survey of the country will be carried out with the aim of identifying suitable aquifers that can be used for deep geothermal energy. The Brandenburg Ministry of Economics emphasizes that this survey not only offers a better basis for planning, but is also intended to pave the way for municipal heat planning.
Temperatures underground
At a depth of 1,000 meters it is pleasantly warm in Lusatia: around 40 degrees Celsius. For every additional 100 meters the temperature rises by 3 degrees. These geological conditions are regionally quite typical in the North German Basin, like that LBGR explained. There is great interest in this renewable energy source, not least because geothermal energy can be used as a base-load form of energy to generate both heat and electricity.
The project is supported with three million euros. The first steps towards implementation are promising. Economics Minister Daniel Keller has reiterated his support for municipal heat planning and a CO2-free heat supply. A sign that Brandenburg is relying on the advantages of geothermal energy!
Outlook for the next steps
The results of the study are planned for late autumn 2025. DMT Group will carry out the seismic explorations over a distance of over 100 kilometers between Cottbus and Guben and in the adjacent areas. Preliminary investigations, also known as scouting, begin at the beginning of July. There will also be information sessions for residents to keep them updated on the progress of the project.
What does this mean specifically for the region? The potential that lies dormant underground could soon actively contribute to the energy supply. The path to using this geothermal energy still faces some challenges, but the first steps are certainly promising. And if everything goes according to plan, Lusatia could not only provide pure, renewable energy, but also help the economy.
