Revolution for heart safety: 26 defibrillators in Cottbus!

More heart safety is being ensured in Cottbus: The city has signed a cooperation agreement with the Björn Steiger Foundation, which is the starting signal for the “Heart Safe” campaign. This initiative plans to install a total of 26 automated external defibrillators (AED) in the city. This is intended to significantly increase the chances of survival in the event of cardiac arrest, as around 65,000 people in Germany are affected by this every year. Many survivors owe it to the timely deployment of first aiders and technical aids before the emergency services arrive.

So far, eight AED locations are already active in Cottbus. These are located, among other things, in the gymnasiums of several elementary schools, in the Kahren community center, in the Sachsendorf socio-cultural center and in the town hall. The tie will soon follow: eight other locations have already installed the necessary outdoor boxes. The defibrillators should be installed there as soon as possible, primarily at sports facilities and in savings bank branches.

Expansion of locations

The project is not only being pushed forward in the central areas. Installation orders are currently underway for six other locations, such as the “Zur Spreeperle” inn in Kiekebusch and various community and club centers. In a later phase, it is also planned to equip the IKMZ of the BTU Cottbus and the information center at the main train station with AEDs. The initiative is spread across a total of 15 lighthouses and seven information points within the city where the defibrillators are accessible. Two savings bank locations and two emergency fire engines (HLF) from the professional fire department will also be equipped with AEDs, which will further improve comprehensive care.

A declared goal of the Björn Steiger Foundation is to raise awareness among the population through regular training in lay resuscitation and to raise awareness of cardiac safety. “Heartproof” is a Germany-wide project that aims to make regions “heartproof” and increase the chances of survival in the event of cardiac arrest. One AED device is provided for every 1,000 inhabitants in order to be able to act quickly in an emergency.

The “Herzsicher” campaign positions itself as a lighthouse concept to strengthen disaster protection in Cottbus. As reported by niederlausitz-aktuell.de, the installation of defibrillators is not only a technical but also a social concern that is aimed at the need for quick help in critical situations. The initiative could not only save lives, but also strengthen coexistence in the city.

With this innovative project, Cottbus shows that it has a good hand when it comes to combining modern technology and social responsibility. The city is taking the right path to ensure the safety of its citizens.
