SV Babelsberg 03: Existential fears due to high penalties and deficits!
On Monday morning, SV Babelsberg 03 officially started the new 2025/26 season with the start of training. The event not only heralded the start of the first training sessions, but was also the start of an exciting and tense general meeting at the Thalia Cinema in Babelsberg in the evening.
There was a particular discussion about the association's fines of the last few months, which are putting a heavy burden on the club. SV Babelsberg 03 had to accept a deficit of 74,000 euros in the past 2024 financial year, which accumulated due to declining ticket sales, increasing expenses for security services and high fines. In total, the club claimed around 3.1 million euros in income and 3.2 million euros in expenses. In 2024, a fine of around 66,000 euros was incurred, while 34,000 euros were already imposed for 2025. The total fines add up to over 100,000 euros for the two years.
Serious incidents and consequences
The latest sanctions result from an incident during a state cup game against Energie Cottbus in September 2024, when Babelsberg fans set off numerous Bengalos and fireworks. In this game, which Cottbus won 3-2, Energie player Niko Bretschneider's wife was also attacked. Even more alarming is the decision by the Brandenburg State Football Association (FLB) to only approve participation in the state cup until 2027 on probation. Further riots could lead to a year-long exclusion from the cup. After the FLB's ruling, the club finds itself in a difficult situation - especially since there is ambiguity about the definition of "incidents" and a violation of the probation conditions could result in significant loss of income.
The penalties have an existential impact on the club, especially since a potential state cup victory and the associated participation in the DFB Cup are considered important economic prospects. For this reason, the board plans to appeal the FLB's ruling to the regional court after all appeals to the FLB have been exhausted. A complaint is being prepared, particularly regarding alleged procedural errors.
Further developments in football
Many clubs in the region are already planning the coming football season and preparing for the challenges ahead. Last week, the FLB also awarded the Innovation Prize Impulse for Diversity to promote outstanding club projects in the areas of social sustainability, prevention and digital progress. This shows that despite the difficulties faced by SV Babelsberg, the commitment to positive and inclusive football in the region remains strong.
With all of these challenges and perspectives, the next few months are of great importance for SV Babelsberg 03 and the entire Brandenburg Football Association. The fans hope that the club will emerge from this difficult time stronger and that a return to sporting success will soon be possible again.
