Dahme-Spreewald is investing in the future: 16 new electric buses are launching!
The Dahme-Spreewald region is setting a clear example in terms of sustainable mobility: The Regional Transport Company Dahme-Spreewald (RVS) has now put 16 new electric buses into operation. These modern vehicles are not only emission-free, but also extremely quiet in operation, improving the quality of life in communities. How Niederlausitz Current reports, the buses are each 12 meters long and can accommodate up to 71 passengers. With a range of around 300 kilometers, they are ideally equipped for daily use.
The charging time for a full charge is a maximum of two hours. This fast charging process ensures that the buses can be used efficiently in regular service. In addition to the standard equipment, these modern electric buses also offer special parking spaces for wheelchairs and strollers, USB charging stations and free WiFi to provide passengers with additional convenience.
Investments and funding
In total, the investment for this new e-bus fleet and the necessary charging infrastructure amounts to 11.1 million euros. Of this, 5.7 million euros are provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport and 4.4 million euros by the Dahme-Spreewald district. District Administrator Sven Herzberger emphasizes how important this initiative is for climate protection and sustainable mobility in the region. In addition, 16 new diesel intercity buses will be purchased to modernize the fleet, modernizing 20 percent of the entire bus fleet.
The new electric buses will be used primarily in the north of the district. This development fits seamlessly into the requirements of the Clean Vehicle Procurement Act and shows RVS's clear commitment to more environmentally friendly passenger transport.
Test phases and future developments
But that's not all: Last year, RVS carried out a test phase with a battery-electric bus from BYD from the end of February to mid-March. This bus with a battery power of 200 kW could accelerate from 0 to 40 km/h in just ten seconds and had a range of 280 km per charge. Managing Director Mr. Richter emphasizes that the collaboration with BYD is crucial in order to realistically assess the performance of electric buses and take the next step towards emission-free mobility. How Dahme innovation supplemented, a total of 16 more electric buses from BYD are planned for 2025.
Another interesting aspect in the world of electromobility is the development at MAN Truck & Bus. The 1,000th MAN Lion’s City E was produced in September 2023 and is now being used successfully in many European cities, including Germany. This shows that MAN has massively expanded its eMobility capacities, with the goal of making half of all new city buses electric by 2025. Loud MAN Truck & Bus 63 electric buses from MAN were registered in Germany in the first half of 2023.
In summary, it can be said that the RVS and its partners are on a promising path to making mobility in the Dahme-Spreewald region not only more efficient, but also more environmentally friendly. They have definitely shown a good hand!
