Summer holidays at BER: 3.7 million passengers and new CT scanners!

The summer holidays are just around the corner and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is preparing for an influx of travelers like never before. Between July 24 and September 12, 2025, over 3.7 million passengers are expected in the terminals, an increase of 100,000 passengers compared to last year. Aletta von Massenbach, the chairwoman of the management, assures that everything is being done to cope with the wave of travel and keep processes stable. “We have taken the necessary precautions to provide our passengers with the best possible support,” said von Massenbach in a recent report maz-online.de.

In preparation for the high number of passengers from the first day of the holiday, new CT scanners will be installed in Terminal 1. These modern scanners, which will be operational from July 24th, will not only help to significantly reduce waiting times at security checkpoints, but also offer the advantage of allowing laptops and liquids to remain in hand luggage. Four more CT scanners will be added on August 13, bringing the total to eight security lines. All twelve security lines in the South Pavilion are already equipped with this technology, which has reduced the waiting time there to just two minutes, according to the airport operators.

Efficient security controls

Responsibility for aviation security checks at BER has been transferred from the Federal Police to the airport company as planned since January 1, 2024. This makes BER the second German airport after Frankfurt am Main to take on this responsibility. The entire renovation and introduction of the new scanners cost between six and seven million euros, with each security line costing around one million euros. With this measure, those responsible want to optimize processes and significantly reduce waiting times for travelers. The safety of passengers and employees has the highest priority, according to a report from berlin-airport.de.

Current estimates assume that the highest number of passengers will arrive at BER Airport, especially at the start of the holidays and on weekends, especially after the certificate issuance and on July 25th. A maximum of 90,000 passengers can depart from BER on a single day. Destinations such as Mallorca, Turkey, Spain, France and Italy are very popular among travelers.

Review of aviation

The aviation industry has recovered surprisingly quickly after the Corona-related restrictions in recent years. Air passenger traffic revenues exceeded $650 billion in 2023, exceeding pre-crisis levels. While Deutsche Lufthansa carried around 123 million passengers in 2023, the Ryanair Group was the largest player in Europe with 169 million passengers, according to statisticians Statista report.

Overall, Berlin Brandenburg Airport becomes a hotspot for travelers in summer, which is well prepared to meet the high demands during the holiday season. Be sure to keep an eye on possible waiting times and processes and enjoy your trip!
