Wildau weekly market: move to Wildorado or stay? This is how the citizens decide!

The Wildau weekly market is facing a possible big change. A move from the Meyer Beck parking lot to the Wildorado sports center is planned. In a survey conducted by the Senior Citizens' Advisory Council, citizens were asked for their opinion on this topic. “What we always wanted to know from you” – this is the motto of the survey. So far, 500 questionnaires have been distributed and more than 250 answers have already been received. Mayor Frank Nerlich confirmed serious considerations about a change of location.
The survey is open until July 17th and voting cards are available at the weekly market until July 16th. Citizens have the opportunity to choose between:

  • dem Verbleib des Marktes am bisherigen Standort,
  • einem Wechsel zum Wildorado,
  • oder der Meinung, dass der Standort egal ist.

A possible move of the market could take place as early as the end of 2025, although a final decision is still pending. The reason for the planned move is, among other things, the loss of parking spaces due to the renovation of the schools. Additionally, the market at Wildorado is expected to be more visible and, combined with surrounding amenities, could attract more visitors. Meanwhile, some traders are expressing concerns. Many of her clients rely on walking aids and may find the longer commute to Wildorado an obstacle. Senior citizens' advisory board members and residents are strongly committed to keeping the market at its current location in order to make it more service-friendly.

Seniors in focus

The importance of surveys for forming opinions among seniors can also be seen by looking at the activities of the Senior Citizens' Advisory Council in Rheinberg. He conducted a survey among citizens aged 60 and over to better understand their needs and wishes. 189 completed forms were evaluated, with many respondents suggesting a meeting place for seniors after the café closed was the icing on the cake. There is a clear desire for social encounters and a contact point for older people, which is reinforced by the frequent inquiries to the advisory board.Rheinberghas gained some important insights.

The survey produced interesting results: 112 of those surveyed would like to have a permanent meeting place, and the desire for a more attractive weekly market was also loudly expressed. The age structure shows that most participants are between 66 and 75 years old, with many living in and around the city center. When asked about contact persons who should be responsible for questions regarding aging and care advice, the family was mentioned most frequently.
This clearly shows that contact with relatives is of central importance for many seniors. Constant communication and access to relevant information are crucial for the well-being of older people.

Insights into the lives of older people

In addition, social development becomes clear when you look at the results of the German Aging Survey (DEAS). This comprehensive long-term study, which has been carried out regularly since 1996, looks at the living conditions of older people aged 40 and over and highlights a wide range of topics such as social support, health behavior and mobility.BMFSFJgives an exciting insight into the developments that have been recorded over more than two decades. This also makes it clear how important it is to promote the quality of life and well-being of the older generation.

In summary, the current surveys and studies make it clear how important the opinions of older citizens are and how exciting it is to take their wishes for meeting places, markets and social contact points into account. The challenges that seniors face in particular must not be forgotten when making decisions in the city. It remains to be hoped that the upcoming surveys and considerations will lead to a result that makes all parties happy.
