Cows cause nighttime excitement in Elsterwerda – police on duty!

On Friday night, several runaway cows caused a stir in Elsterwerda. Shortly before midnight, witnesses informed the police about a cow on the Elsterbrücke in Südstrasse. Other cows quickly joined the lonely animal, which didn't exactly calm the situation. But the police were quick and took the cows to a nearby meadow after contact with the animals' owner was established. Fortunately, the entire operation went without any harm to animals or people Niederlausitz Current reported.

This isn't the first time untamed cattle have caused a stir. Just recently, around 20 cows were spotted near a country road near Sonnewalde on Sunday morning, causing considerable disruption. The animals partially blocked the road and a driver was literally surrounded by them. Police were called to keep the cows off the road and an adjacent railway line. Rail traffic had to operate on sight for around three hours to avoid possible collisions. After intensive efforts, the animal owner was finally able to regain control of his cows and lead them back to pasture. How RBB24 reported, we are now investigating why the cows were able to leave the meadow at all.

Emergency cow aid from the police

A similar situation also attracted the attention of the police in Wasserburg. On Whit Sunday, June 8, 2025, four calves ran past the Wasserburg police station at around 4 a.m. and ensured that the officers took action. The calves then stayed in a pasture in the Rottmoos area. In order to catch the little runaways, surrounding farmers were asked for help. Since the owner was unknown, the police turned to the public and asked the rightful owner to call 08071/9177-0 Wasserburg24 reported.

These incidents show that the cow herds in our region continue to pose unexpected challenges. While the police are always ready to bring the animals to safety, it also shows that a good knack for handling the animals is required. Here it is important to both check the safe pastures and keep a close eye on the herds. Whether in Elsterwerda, Sonnewalde or Wasserburg, a cow can quickly cause a lot of excitement!
