South Brandenburg's firefighters break records and conquer the European Championship podium!

The German women's national firefighting team reached a real milestone at the European Championships in Dolna Banya, Bulgaria. This European Championship, which took place at the end of August 2023, was the most successful in the team's history. The athletes set four new German records and secured an excellent third place in the overall ranking, which is a huge reason for everyone involved to be happy. Particularly noteworthy is Lisette Jüngling from Elbe-Elster, who is not only considered an outstanding athlete, but is also the first German firefighter athlete to hold records in five disciplines. Her current records are beyond impressive and include:

  • Hindernisbahn: 17,47 Sekunden
  • Hakenleitersteigen: 7,87 Sekunden
  • Zweikampfwertung: 25,34 Sekunden
  • 4x100m-Staffel: 66,41 Sekunden

The team also achieved the following placements in the competitions:

  • Hindernisbahn: 3. Platz (hinter Tschechien und der Ukraine)
  • Hakenleitersteigen: 3. Platz (hinter Tschechien und der Ukraine)
  • 4x100m-Staffel: 3. Platz (hinter Tschechien und der Ukraine)
  • Löschangriff: 4. Platz

A historic result

These achievements mean not only personal success for the German women's national team, but also a historically high position in the overall ranking. The overall ranking of 3 is the best result that a German women's team has ever achieved at a European Championship Radio Cottbus holds on. Many of the athletes come from southern Brandenburg, which underlines the importance of regional support.

The coaching team led by Wolf-Dieter Lakatsch and Reik Lehmann played a crucial role in this success. After the European Championships, the German women and men took part in the International Championships in Třebíč, Czech Republic. Here the women's team continued to show their skills: they secured 1st place in the firefighting attack and took 2nd place in the relay. The men were also able to boast 3rd place in the firefighting attack and in the overall ranking. All of this shows how popular firefighting sports are in Germany.

New records and successes at championships

However, the successes of the German firefighter athletes did not end with the European Championships. New records were also set at the German Fire Brigade Championships, which took place in Torgau and Taura. Lisette Jüngling improved her record in the 100m steeplechase to 17.70 seconds and was the first German woman to break the 8-second mark in the hook ladder climb with 7.93 seconds.
