Experience Madre”: Delcy Morelos’ impressive earth sculpture in Berlin!
A fascinating earth sculpture by the Colombian artist Delcy Morelos is currently being presented at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. The work entitled “Madre” measures an impressive 20 meters in length and 6 meters in height, consists largely of earth and has an impressive geometric shape. The scent of the sculpture, reminiscent of cinnamon and cloves, transports visitors to another world. In her work, Morelos places great emphasis on the sense of smell, which is central to indigenous cultures. “Madre” is not just a work of art; It is an invitation to rediscover and experience the connection to the earth, as it says in the RBB24.
The installation has been open to the public since July 11, 2025 and will be on view until January 25, 2026. Visitors are allowed to enter small recesses in the sculpture to look at the earth up close and feel the intense scent. Morelos describes the experience as an embrace from Mother Earth, which has a calming effect and offers a new perspective to the often alienated people in urban spaces.
A dialogue with nature
Delcy Morelos, born in Tierralta, Colombia in 1967, has always addressed the colonial legacy and cosmologies of the Americas in her artistic practice. “Madre” showcases her ability to weave together materials and knowledge. This first solo exhibition in Germany offers an intensive insight into her work, which is characterized by sensory experiences and a close connection to indigenous knowledge. The exhibition is in dialogue with the works of Joseph Beuys, whose works can also be seen at the Hamburger Bahnhof, and thus offers an exciting comparison of two approaches, as presented by the SMB.
Morelos is known for her impressive installations, often designed with earth, clay and other natural materials. She created her first earth sculpture called “Eva” back in 2012 and since then her creative exchange with the earth has continued. Her work is appreciated worldwide; Her sculpture “Earthly Paradise” was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2022. Future presentations of her works are already being planned, for example in New York and Buenos Aires.
A place of meeting
The exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof is not only a highlight for art lovers, but also shows the important role that contemporary art plays in social and cultural discourse. The Hamburger Bahnhof, as part of the national and international art scene, sees itself as a central place for encounters and critical discussions of contemporary topics. This philosophy becomes particularly clear when one considers the development of the ifa galleries, which have also created a space for art from different, often difficult to access regions, as [ifa](https://www.ifa.de/blog/post/ein-halbes-jahr Jahrhundert-kunst-einer-globalisiert-welt/) highlights.
Overall, with Morelos' installation, Hamburger Bahnhof promises to generously promote the dialogue between people and nature. Visitors are invited to experience this unique work of art and embark on a sensory journey that redefines both their own perception and their relationship to the earth.
