Arson in Rathenow: Tenant in clinic, police investigate!

On Sunday, June 15, 2025, several incidents occurred in Rathenow that moved the local community. Particularly notable was a fire in a ground floor apartment that was noticed around 11:20 a.m. Residents noticed smoke coming from an apartment building and immediately alerted the fire department and rescue services. The emergency services were able to quickly extinguish the smoldering fire, meaning the apartment remained habitable. However, the tenant was put into a psychological state of emergency and had to be admitted to a specialist clinic. The police have started an investigation because arson is suspected. As reported on the Rathenow24 website, arson is considered a serious criminal offense, which is regulated in Section 306 of the Criminal Code and can be punished with prison sentences of one to ten years.

But what exactly does the arson law contain? The paragraph deals with the intentional setting on fire of other people's buildings or other protected objects. Various elements of the offense must be met in order for a conviction to occur. First of all, setting a fire is one of those acts that require objective attribution and causality in order to impair the protected legal interests. These laws are intended not only to protect property, but also to avoid risks to the life and limb of other people. If the consequences are serious, such as health impairments, there are even harsher penalties. This is impressively supported by the extensive analysis of criminal law on Juracademy.

Further incidents in Rathenow and the surrounding area

A few hours before the fire, there was a turning accident on Curlandstrasse around 11:00 a.m. in which a 58-year-old cyclist was slightly injured. An 83-year-old VW van driver had given way to her, which resulted in her falling. The cyclist was taken to a hospital and the damage is estimated at around 200 euros.

License plates were also stolen from a parked Chevrolet on Nauener Strasse between Saturday and Sunday. The police have taken forensic measures and initiated an investigation; the damage caused amounts to approximately 50 euros.

Traffic violations

Another incident occurred on State Road 161 in Brieselang, where a 45-year-old BMW driver tried to avoid a crossing deer and collided with a street tree. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the material damage to his vehicle is around 8,000 euros.

In Brandenburg an der Havel, two drivers were stopped on suspicion of drugs. The test for a 37-year-old Opel driver showed positive results for synthetic substances. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver refused the drug test and blood samples were taken in both cases. Another incident involved a 47-year-old driver who, with a blood alcohol level of 1.84 per mille, left the road and collided with a tree, but was uninjured.

Recent incidents in the region clearly show that both arson and traffic accidents can have serious consequences. From a legal perspective, those accused of crimes such as arson have the right to refuse to testify and to consult a criminal defense lawyer, which is crucial in crisis situations like these. Early legal advice can help protect your rights and avoid potentially serious consequences, such as possible entries in your criminal record or claims for damages.
