Roundabout in Stechow: B188 completely closed from July 28th!

From July 28th, federal highway 188 near Stechow will become a construction site and will be completely closed until September 6th. The reason for this is the conversion of a particularly accident-prone intersection of the B188 with the state road L982 and the district road K6317/Nennhausener Straße into a roundabout. Several traffic accidents, including two serious incidents in November and December 2024, underline the need for these measures to increase road safety, reports Maz online.

In addition to the construction work on the roundabout, a new cycle path will also be built that connects Stechow with Rhinsmühlen. The preparatory work begins on July 17th. A five kilometer long cycle path is planned to improve safety for cyclists in the region. These measures go hand in hand with the reconstruction of the intersection, which will not only make traffic flow more smoothly, but also increase bike-friendliness. The state road authority has taken various compensatory measures to maintain the green infrastructure, reports Brandenburg.de.

Detours and construction time

During the full closure, a diversion for car traffic will be signposted via Rhinsmühlen, Kotzen and Nennhausen in the direction of Rathenow. Truck drivers must expect long-range diversions. Residents and delivery traffic have the opportunity to temporarily use the old western access via Friedensstrasse. Even though construction work on the roundabout is scheduled to be completed by September 6th, the situation for cycling does not remain entirely unproblematic. After the roundabout is completed, there will be further disruptions due to the cycle path expansion until the end of April 2026.

Sustainability in focus

The construction work is accompanied by a clear commitment to sustainability. A total of 334 trees and 3,000 meters of hedges are planned to be planted along the cycle path in order to promote nature in the region and expand the compensation areas. The entire construction work cost around 3.5 million euros, and the contract to carry out the work went to Matthäi Bauunternehmen GmbH & Co.KG from Velten.

Local public transport (ÖPNV) could also be affected by the construction work, but there is no clear information on this yet. Havelbus has not yet responded to relevant inquiries.

The upcoming measures are not only necessary to increase traffic safety, but also show a future-oriented approach to infrastructure and nature. While cyclists hope for improvements, the road to full completion is still long.
