Parcels in the Olympic Village – thefts are increasing! What to do?

Hardly a day goes by when citizens aren't occupied with the latest news from Havelland. A current problem is the repeated theft of packages in the Elstal Olympic Village. This situation is not only causing problems for the delivery services, but also for residents. Every day, Deutsche Post and other logistics services deliver packages to the village. But parcels and parcels keep disappearing, especially in front of the 56 mailboxes in the Nations' Dining House, like this one MAZ reported. Tenants who live in the apartments that have been renovated by the company “Terraplan” since 2021 have already reported early thefts, and the police are also informed about the situation.

To counteract this nuisance, Andreas Weidel, managing director of property management company Cimova, has expressed the intention to use unused rooms as a safe place to store parcels. This measure could help prevent thefts and allow residents to have their packages delivered more worry-free.

Comprehensive security measures for seniors

Another issue that many people are currently concerned about is the safety of older citizens. The police have published a brochure specifically highlighting the risks posed to seniors. The 72-page brochure deals with numerous forms of crime that are important for older people. Among other things, dangers at the front door, such as fake police officers or the faking of false emergencies, are discussed. The so-called grandchild tricks and other telephone scams are also listed, such as Police advice holds on.

In addition, tips on protecting yourself from crime are given and the benefits of positive neighborly contacts are highlighted. The brochure also provides information about the WEISSER RING victim support facility and the addresses of local advice centers - a helpful offer for those who have questions about safety.

Decrease in theft crime

The police crime statistics also provide information about crime in Germany. Around 5.8 million crimes were recorded in 2024, with theft crimes accounting for over 1.94 million cases. This means that around a third of all crimes fall into this category. However, the trend shows that the proportion of theft crimes is decreasing compared to previous years. In 2015, the number of thefts was 2.5 million, which accounted for almost 40% of all crimes, like that BKA communicates.

The decline in significantly measured theft crimes has several reasons. Technical measures and the work of prevention centers could have contributed to this. Nevertheless, theft remains a burning issue, especially for residents in vulnerable regions such as Elstal.

In other news, it was announced on July 8, 2025 that the Spektrum special school in Rathenow will be expanded to 16 classes as the number of learners continues to increase. An incident in a seniors' shared apartment in Wustermark has also caused a stir, while the district's veterinary office is looking after a ram that was named "Kalle" by its finders and may be looking for a new home.

The developments in Havelland show the numerous challenges that the residents are faced with. Collaboration between residents, authorities and institutions is required to improve the quality of life for everyone.
