Fear of traffic jams in Falkensee: Commuters have to wait up to 1.5 kilometers!

A look at the traffic situation in Falkensee shows dramatic developments: Since June 12, 2025, half of Spandauer Straße has been closed at the junction with Pestalozzistrasse. The road construction work, which is being carried out by Strabag AG, is intended to curb traffic chaos and improve the infrastructure over a period of three weeks. Four construction workers are working on this construction site, working to expand the essential traffic artery for commuters between Falkensee and Berlin.

At lunchtime, three dozen cars are queued up in both directions on Spandauer Straße. The traffic light on Pestalozzistrasse switches from red to green after almost two minutes, allowing only 20 to 30 vehicles to pass. Around 15,000 people commute from Falkensee to Berlin every day, which leads to a traffic volume of almost 23,000 cars on the busy Spandauer Straße. Long waiting times and dissatisfaction with the situation are clearly noticeable on social networks and among commuters. Bus stops also make additional delays more difficult.

Why the construction site?

Mayor Heiko Richter (independent) emphasizes the need for expansion. He explained that existing deficits in traffic management must be eliminated. Not only will footpaths and cycle paths be retrofitted at the construction site, but new barrier-free crossings will also be created to increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and, in particular, students. These measures will be crucial to improve the traffic situation in view of the upcoming closure of the railway line from Berlin-Spandau to Hamburg, which is scheduled to begin on August 1, 2025.

The city of Falkensee asks citizens to understand the inconvenience during the construction period. It is important to consider alternative routes, such as the recommended diversion via Seegefelder Straße, in order to avoid the traffic jam. Many commuters have already discussed this option on social media.

A look at the numbers

With regard to transport policy, the annual statistical handbook of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), which is published by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, offers valuable insights into the traffic situation in Germany. The survey, which has been providing important information for decision-makers in politics and business for over 40 years, provides information about traffic and its development in the EU. The latest edition for 2024/2025 has been available since February 2025 and costs 69.00 euros, with a subscription available for 60.00 euros. From spring 2026, the next edition is expected for 2025/2026.

The developments on Spandauer Straße are just part of a larger traffic problem that is important not only in Falkensee, but also in the surrounding regions. The challenge of making transport sustainable while ensuring safety remains a task that concerns all actors in transport policy.

Far from congestion, it is important to consider the advantages of a well-planned transport infrastructure - after all, every commuter wants to arrive in their own living room at the end of the day without any major hassle.
