Complete closure of Berlin-Hamburg: DB informs commuters about bus changes!
Preparations for the complete closure of the railway line between Berlin and Hamburg are in full swing. The rail information tour started at Falkensee train station on July 2nd to inform commuters about the upcoming changes. Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) were on site from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. to talk to travelers. Many commuters from Falkensee are so far inadequately informed about the upcoming changes, which is an important concern for those involved in transport. This closure begins on August 1st and lasts nine months, which means a significant change for daily mobility, as MAZ reports.
During the complete general renovation, train capacities on the route to Berlin will be increased. The DB has already announced that up to 65 daily ICE connections between Hamburg and Berlin will remain, 36 of which are direct. However, travelers must be prepared for the journey time to be extended by 45 minutes, as long-distance trains will increasingly stop at stations such as Salzwedel, Stendal, Lüneburg or Uelzen. To compensate, the DB is offering a comprehensive replacement offer in regional transport, especially through the numerous new replacement buses in use, to ensure a smooth exchange.
Efficient changes in regional transport
What is particularly pleasing is that 600 bus drivers were hired by Ecovista for rail replacement services (SEV). The replacement buses, which run between Falkensee and Dallgow, among others, are pink and equipped with modern amenities such as seat belts, charging stations and WiFi. During the day, the service is supplemented by two articulated buses every 30 minutes. The VBB intends to adjust bus timetables based on actual capacity utilization. However, Finkenkrug is not directly served by the replacement buses; Here the existing line 653 will be reinforced in order to make the changes as smooth as possible, as [Deutsche Bahn](https://www.deutschebahn.com/de/presse/presse-regional/pr-berlin-de/aktuell/presseinformationen/Generalsanierung-Hamburg-Berlin-Weiter-direkte-Fernzuege-und-um comprehensives-Ersatzangebot-im-Regionalverkehr-13276614) reports.
Particularly practical: The real-time journeys of the replacement buses are available online. This means travelers can see where their bus is at any time, which is particularly important during the transition period. From August 1st, the platforms will be closed to rail traffic; the last train on the route will leave Spandau at 8:56 p.m. that day. From this point on, mobility will depend heavily on the newly established bus routes.
Further information and support
It is advisable for commuters to find out about the changes in good time to avoid unpleasant surprises. A wealth of information is available on the website bahn.de, including the current disruption map, departure boards and the option to be notified of delays. With this comprehensive change, the DB is creating greater comfort during the construction period and at the same time ensuring that the quality of the railway infrastructure is sustainably improved.
With the general renovation of the Hamburg–Berlin line from August 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, not only will the track infrastructure be renewed, but 28 stations will also benefit from new toilet facilities and barrier-free access. But until that happens, there is an exciting time full of adjustments ahead for commuters, for whom the exchange between transport providers and passengers is particularly important. So stay informed and remember: nothing is more constant than change!
