Health insurance contributions are rising again: What awaits those insured now!

From July 2025, those insured in Germany will have to dig deeper into their pockets again because health insurance contributions will rise again. The financial difficulties of many health insurance companies continue, and eight providers have increased their contributions since the beginning of the year. In the last few months, a total of 14 health insurance companies have increased their fees, and six more have applied for an increase in their additional contributions as of July 1st. That sounds alarming, and it is.

This is particularly clear from the largest jumps in contributions presented by the IKK Berlin and Brandenburg: They increase their contribution by 4.35 percent, which amounts to 18.95 euros. The IKK Innovationskasse also follows with 4.31 percent (18.90 euros) and Securvita with an increase of 3.91 percent (18.50 euros). If you take a closer look, you will see that corporate health insurance companies such as Merck BKK, BKK BMW and others are also increasing their contributions. But the big issue remains the question: Who ultimately has to pay the bill? Merkur reports that ...

The financial situation of the health insurance companies

According to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, the average contribution rate for statutory health insurance is 17.1 percent for 2025, after being 16.3 percent in 2024. This represents the highest contribution rate in the history of the GKV. The average additional contribution rate will also increase from 1.7 percent in 2024 to 2.5 percent on January 1, 2025. This does not relieve the burden on the health insurance companies, but rather increases the existing difficulties. It is estimated that health insurance companies have to contend with an annual deficit of over 10 billion euros. Data from the VDEK show that this trend increase is not just a one-off phenomenon, but that the prospects for improvement appear rather bleak.

The federal government has sought loans of 2.3 billion euros for statutory health insurance and 500 million euros for long-term care insurance for the years 2025 and 2026. However, Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) describes the loans as not a sustainable solution and criticizes the lack of financial support for non-insurance services. After all, the question remains: Where does all the money end up? Like the basic amounts for citizens' benefit recipients and the pension contributions for caring relatives, this problem is also not built into the planned budget balance.

Additional contributions and their effects

The increase in additional contributions has a direct impact on the insured. For a single with a gross income of 2,000 euros, the increase in the IKK Berlin and Brandenburg contribution means, for example, 156 euros annually. With an income of 5000 euros it is even 390 euros. These are amounts that you should think about when the next paycheck arrives. The financial burden is growing and the questions about solutions to the excessive expenses are becoming more urgent than ever. Finanztip adds that…

The political discussion about the use and distribution of money in the health sector remains exciting. It remains to be seen how the federal government's plans will work in practice and whether insured people in Germany will be granted a ray of hope in this financial darkness. In view of the imminent premium increases, it is time to take a look at the different providers and perhaps critically question whether your own insurer is really the right choice. The number of increased contributions speaks volumes and encourages those insured to make informed decisions.
