New railway line: Eurocity will connect Elsterwerda and Poland from December!

Exciting news for all rail travelers in the region: The Polish state railway PKP carried out a test drive for a new Eurocity connection on Wednesday. In the future, this will run from eastern Poland near the Ukrainian border directly to Saxony and Brandenburg. According to reports from rbb24, the planned route will run from Przemysl via Wroclaw, Krakow and Leipzig to Elsterwerda, allowing a direct connection between Germany and Poland.

The test drive, during which the Euro City train also stopped in Hoyerswerda, was used to check the platform lengths and heights by Deutsche Bahn employees. A new express train could run twice a day from December 13, 2025, both in the morning and in the afternoon. This new connection could help enable transport between the Elbe-Elster region and Poland in just a few hours and thus significantly shorten travel times.

Important project for the region

The advantages of this connection are not only obvious for travelers. Mayor Mirko Pink from Hoyerswerda emphasizes how important this connection is for the entire Lusatia. He sees this rapid connection as an excellent tool to support structural change in the region and attract skilled workers. This could give the region new impetus and raise living standards.

For the mayor of Niesky, Kathrin Uhlemann, the situation is somewhat different. Your community will not be served directly by the express train because the platform in Niesky is not suitable for express trains. Nevertheless, she is pleased about well-timed regional trains between Niesky and Hoyerswerda, which are intended to improve connections to the new long-distance connection.

Fares and offers for travelers

In order to make the most of the new travel options, a BahnCard 25 could also be a good choice. This card offers a 25% discount on Flex, Saver and Super Saver prices and costs just €62.90 per year. For all young travelers under 27, there is even a discounted version for €39.90. If you want it even cheaper, you can purchase a trial BahnCard for just €19.90, which is valid for three months and also offers attractive discounts. More information about the BahnCard is available directly on the Deutsche Bahn website.

Overall, it can be said that the future looks promising for travelers between Poland and Germany. While the test drives are the first steps towards a permanent connection, the commitment of the responsible authorities on both the German and Polish sides is a positive aspect for all affected regions.

With this in mind, how will the new connection develop and what further advances will we see in the future? Stay tuned!
