Mayoral election in Glienicke: Who will be Oberlack's successor?
The political stage in Glienicke/Nordbahn is getting hotter as preparations for the upcoming mayoral election have begun. Mayor Hans G. Oberlack from the FDP, who steered the municipality's fortunes for over 16 years, is retiring at the end of this term. The application deadline for election proposals ended on July 17, 2025 at 12 p.m., while the deadline for supporting signatures expired on July 16 at 4 p.m maz-online.de.
An exciting selection of candidates has been formed, including:
- Uwe Klein (SPD)
- Arno Steguweit (CDU)
- André Spannemann (AfD)
- Lydia Neilson (B90/Grüne)
- Michael Breier (parteilos)
- Mario Eberhardt (parteilos)
Conditions for nominations
So far, two of the individual candidates have achieved the required 44 signatures of support. This step is necessary because new nominees need additional support if they did not receive at least 5% of the vote in the last election, as stated in gesetze-bayern.de. This shows that the hurdle for new candidates is often high, especially in an environment where voters weigh their votes well.
The election committee will meet on July 22nd at 6 p.m. in the New Town Hall to review the submitted proposals. The deadline for registering those eligible to vote is August 10th. The election notifications will be sent out in mid-August so that citizens are well informed.
The electoral process in Germany
The mayoral election in Glienicke is part of the municipal elections in Germany, which include a large number of elections for the parliamentary representation of municipalities and cities. The Basic Law ensures that these elections are general, direct, free, equal and secret, informs bpb.de. The term of office for directly elected mayors is usually between five and eight years, which further underlines the importance of these elections.
The election will take place on September 21st. To ensure that voters can cast their votes on time, applications for postal voting documents must be submitted by September 19th at 6 p.m. In special cases, an application can be submitted until 3 p.m. on election day. If no candidate receives the required number of votes in the first round, a runoff election is scheduled for October 12, 2025, which further increases the tension.
The political waves in Glienicke/Nordbahn are in a storm. With such a diverse range of candidates, it will be interesting to see what issues and concerns voters will care about. A good hand in the election could set the course for the future of the community!
