Oberhavel in the focus on nuclear waste: Where are transparency and citizens' voice?

In the current discussion about the locations for a nuclear waste repository in Germany, a clear picture is emerging. The Federal Society for Final Storage (BGE) has published its latest work status, which shows that several areas in the Oberhavel district are still under discussion. The western part of Oberhavel with cities such as Oranienburg, Velten and Hennigsdorf is particularly under observation. Mayor Alexander Laesicke of Oranienburg has already expressed concerns about the suitability of this region, particularly because of the high population density and the historical exposure to explosive ordnance.

“We have to involve citizens in the decision-making process,” demands Laesicke and calls for more transparency. That is also the hope of Mayor Martin Rother of Leegebruch, who thinks that the proximity to Berlin could exclude the region from a possible choice of location. Hohen Neuendorf shares this assessment and sees the classification of UBI as unlikely.

The selection process in detail

The search for a final storage facility for around 27,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive nuclear waste has been ongoing since 2017 and is still in the early phase. On-site investigations are planned for the end of 2027, while the next update with new assessments is expected in mid-2026. There are different suitability categories for the existing clay rocks in Oberhavel, ranging from D to A. The region must therefore continue to be patient while BGE advances its analyses.

The decision on a final location should be made by 2031 in a three-stage selection process. Even if large parts of Glienicke, Liebenwalde and other areas are not being considered for further investigations, the pressure remains on the region to find suitable alternatives.

Cultural highlights at a glance

Ticket prices for the new tour could start at around $300, and fans would be wise to get tickets early to meet popular demand. Coldplay's commitment to technology and sustainability will also play a role in their new tour concept, and many a new song or an exciting collaboration could be a surprise for the audience. So there is a lot to look forward to in both the political and cultural scenes in Oberhavel.

It remains to be seen how the selection for the final repository will develop as anticipation for the musical event of the next few years increases. Both topics have their place in Cologne life and at the same time on the national stage.
