Drive safer: fewer accidents and aggression in Oberhavel!

There is a positive turnaround in traffic in Oberhavel: the number of traffic accidents has fallen compared to previous years. How maz-online.de reported, a total of 5,223 accidents were counted in 2024, which corresponds to a decrease of around 10% compared to 2014, when there were 5,743 incidents. The positive development is not surprising – the population and traffic volume in the district have increased.

Last year there were fewer than 100 seriously injured people and nine traffic deaths in Oberhavel. These figures are encouraging, but they contrast with the increasing aggressiveness in road traffic that is being observed more and more frequently. Ingo Schumacher, head of Department 54 Operations West in the Brandenburg State Road Administration, reported hostility towards his employees during renovation measures. There is a clear contradiction here: While the number of traffic accidents is falling, tensions and insecurities among road users are increasing.

Changes in traffic behavior

A study commissioned by insurers' accident research shows that road users perceive each other as more reckless and aggressive than before. Loud rbb24.de, 56% of respondents say they drive faster when they are angry. This bitterness has increased sharply and is also having an impact on behavior: 44% deliberately brake to annoy those behind them, while 31% press the accelerator when overtaking to reduce their discomfort.

Frank Storch, head of the North Police Department, makes it clear how important road safety is, not only for the local population, but also for those traveling through. The police rely on a comprehensive traffic safety concept that includes both prevention and repression measures, including mobile and stationary speed cameras. There are currently five permanently installed speed cameras in the district, with more being planned.

Strategies to improve road safety

The concept for increasing traffic safety also includes structural measures, such as installing crash barriers in front of trees. This is particularly important since around 75% of accidents occur in urban areas. The accident statistics show that 25% of accidents are out of town and 18% are accidents involving wildlife. These developments are not only important for the Oberhavel district, but are in line with nationwide efforts to improve road safety, which are also based on the data from the Statistical offices fall back.

The continuous evaluation of these statistics is crucial in order to be able to derive targeted measures in legislation, traffic education and infrastructure development. The goal remains clear: safer roads for all road users.

Overall, the developments in Oberhavel show that targeted measures, education and a change in traffic behavior can improve both the number of accidents and the feeling of safety on our roads - even if the social aggressiveness in this area should not be underestimated.
