Naturalization in Brandenburg: Why the commitment to Israel is important!

For some time now, there has been a new, controversial regulation in Brandenburg that affects the naturalization of foreign citizens. The Interior Minister, René Wilke (independent), explained in the state parliament in July that the recognition of the State of Israel's right to exist is a prerequisite for naturalization in Germany. This was done in coordination with Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD), who supports Wilke, although the coalition partners BSW and SPD were not informed about the change. The implementation of this commitment is intended to underline Brandenburg's solidarity with Israel and has officially been in effect since the beginning of June 2023. Maz online reports that in practice the confession is only given upon request.

But what does this actually mean for applicants? When applying for naturalization, they are obliged to make three essential declarations: a commitment to the free democratic basic order, a declaration of loyalty and a commitment to Germany's special historical responsibility, particularly with regard to the protection of Jewish life. Even if Israel's right to exist is not explicitly mentioned in the text of the confession, a negative attitude in the process is problematic. RBB24 informed that applicants who raise doubts about their willingness to recognize Israel must be interviewed directly by the clerk. As long as these doubts exist, the naturalization application will not be processed further.

Naturalization process and requirements

Naturalization in Brandenburg comes with clear expectations. In addition to the above-mentioned declarations, foreign citizens must also prove that they can secure their livelihood without social benefits. Penalties for crimes and plural marriage are also exclusion criteria. It is also important that the equality of men and women is respected and that sufficient knowledge of the German language is demonstrated. These regulations are aimed at peaceful coexistence and the basic values of German society. DW emphasizes that, in particular, the expression of loyalty to the basic democratic order is part of the new naturalization guidelines.

Since the introduction of these regulations, there have been no complaints about the naturalization process in the affected municipalities, including Brandenburg an der Havel and Potsdam. While Saxony-Anhalt already demands a strict written commitment to Israel's right to exist, Brandenburg has so far taken a different approach that has proven to be effective.

However, the discussion about naturalization and the commitment to Israel's right to exist remains a hot topic in the German political landscape. Criticisms from various camps emphasize that these requirements could constitute discrimination against certain groups, particularly migrants with a Palestinian background. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Israel's right to exist is non-negotiable for the Brandenburg state government and the measures will be implemented promptly in order to show a clear political stance.
