Neo -Nazis in Cottbus: bomb jackets and burning provocations!

Right -wing extremism is still in wait in the Brandenburg City of Cottbus. On May 23, there was a violent attack on the left alternative residential project cell 79. Five hooded attackers tried to break the front door and threw Bengal torch into the back yard, which triggered a fire. Fortunately, the residents were able to quickly extinguish the fire inside. According to Jungle World the attackers chanted the attackers such as "Adolf Hitler Hooligans" and thus point to the stronger Nazi scene in Cottbus.

This scene is strongly linked to violent football fans, which is not surprising due to the connection between the extreme right, the fan scene of the Football Club Energie Cottbus and criminal structures. The small party "Der III. Weg" and its youth organization National Revolutionary Youth (NRJ) play a central role in mobilizing young right -wing extremists. It is particularly noteworthy that the followers of the scene take up the clothing style of the "Baseballschläger years" of the 1990s and also wear provocative bomber jackets in the stages of Energie Cottbus.

The return of the neo -Nazis

The political situation in Cottbus is alarming. More and more alternative projects and youth clubs have to close, while right -wing extremist groups such as the "III. Way" are spreading more and more. The Mayor of Cottbus and other politicians are calling for targeted police work against right -wing extremists. According to Deutschlandfunk Kultur also addressed to the state government in order to support the communities in their defense against right-wing violence.

The number of active right -wing extremists in Cottbus is estimated at around 170, with 70 of them belong to the now unofficially active group Inferno Cottbus. This gloom is further reinforced by reports on threats and intimidation on the part of the right hooligans in the neighborhood. Initiatives such as "Energy fans against Nazis" try to act against the tidal influence of right-wing extremists are often under pressure and fighting for visibility.

a historical context

The roots of right -wing extremism in Cottbus go back to the 1990s. The raid of 200 neo -Nazis on a refugee accommodation in August 1992 was particularly concise. This and similar events are a dark chapter in the city, which still throws shadows. The riots at that time were often downplayed in the press, while the voices of those affected were hardly heard. According to the Amadeu Antonio Stiftung , neo-Nazis are still present in the city and are shown in schools and other areas of public life.

The current right -wing extremist mobilization has increased, not only in the context of football, but also by withdrawals to civil society and the use of pandemebed fears. Events and demonstrations, such as that of the “Future Heimat” association, underline the presence and influence of right -wing extremist ideologies. Furthermore, the company faces the challenge of fighting these structures and creating safer places for endangered communities.

In the continuing examination of right -wing extremism in Cottbus, it is urgently needed that politics develop effective strategies together with civil society. In perspective, the municipalities have to become a safe place for all citizens: inside, regardless of origin and ideology. Only together can be counteracted the dark sign that threatens to overmann.
