A Midsummer Night's Dream in the Dominican Monastery: Music enchants the audience

In a unique musical event, the Oper Oder Spree music theater festival transformed the Dominican monastery into a place full of magical sounds and captivating stories. Last year Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream” was performed here. This year the production “Dream Night Summer” is on the program. This creative production focuses on the exciting path between the dream world and reality and takes the audience on a fascinating adventure.

The artistic directors, Professor Lars Franke, who took over the direction, and Dirk Rave, who was responsible for the musical arrangements, presented a selection of classical and modern musical elements. The production follows the story of Helena, Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius and also brings the magical elves Titania, Oberon and Puck into play. The innovative mix of musical styles, which combines pieces by Henry Purcell, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Benjamin Britten, Giacomo Meyerbeer and Queen, was extremely well received by the audience.

A refreshing interpretation

Audience members such as Christiane Kücken and Veronika Maßors were enthusiastic about this refreshing musical harmony, which is perfect for opera beginners. The high quality of the production was recognized with loud applause, with the cast as well as the musical direction and the equipment captivating the audience. Particularly noteworthy is the decision to have the role of Puck played by a female actress who seduces Titania in the performance. A colorful, rainbow-colored umbrella served as a symbol of Titania's revival and brought additional visual flair to the performance.

Unfortunately, the number of spectators this Sunday was rather small. Some guests suspected that this was due to the date, as school enrollment and the first day of school for many children took place on that day. Nevertheless, the general mood of the audience was optimistic and satisfied with the performance.

Shakespeare's influence on music

Shakespeare has left a huge impact on music history to this day. Loud Euronews More than 300 operas are based on his works. An early example is Henry Purcell's semi-opera The Fairy Queen, which was inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream. His pieces reflect timeless themes that are still relevant within modern walls and show how much his stories have moved artists in different eras.

The connection between theater and music emerged in the Florentine area at the same time as Shakespeare's own views on theater. Compositions by greats such as Verdi with "Macbetto" and "Otello" as well as really good interpretations in the 20th century, such as Benjamin Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", testify to the diversity that arises from Shakespeare's works. Professor Julie Sanders from Newcastle University also highlights Shakespeare's enormous influence on the musical world.

In the production “Dream-Night-Summer” these influences are presented in all their glory, and the quality of the production is proof of the lasting impact of Shakespeare's brilliant texts and themes.
