Danger of severe weather in Berlin: heavy rain and storms are threatening again!

A violent storm hit Berlin on Monday, tragically claiming the life of a woman while several other people sustained injuries. Strong hurricane-like gusts with speeds of over 100 km/h caused significant damage and paralyzed S-Bahn traffic in the capital. This reports Daily Mirror.

But it's not just this catastrophe. The German Weather Service (DWD) is concerned about the upcoming weather conditions: dangerous storms are threatening the region again from Thursday. A heat wave with temperatures of up to 31 degrees Celsius is forecast for Thursday. This is followed by a low foothills that brings with it warm, humid air that is prone to thunderstorms.

Another risk of severe weather

Strong thunderstorms can also be expected in the Berlin-Brandenburg area from Thursday afternoon. The DWD warns of heavy rain of up to 20 liters per square meter, hail and squalls with speeds between 70 and 90 km/h. What is particularly problematic is that many trees are weakened by the spring drought. This increases the risk of falling branches or even uprooted trees, which in turn endangers safety.

“You should be careful before entering forests,” warns the DWD, as the first showers will reach the federal territory on Thursday morning. The thunderstorm front could then extend over a large area across Germany, although the intensity will vary from region to region.

Regionally different weather situations

The forecast wind peaks, which are expected to occur between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the area between Magdeburg and Berlin, are particularly significant. There could be gusts of up to 90 km/h. The risk of severe weather affects not only Germany, but also parts of the Czech Republic and Austria. Supercells can also form there, which could worsen the situation. Citizens in these regions are advised to keep an eye on weather warnings, such as those below weather.com can be found.

Climate change as a background factor

The increasing number of extreme weather events are directly related to climate change, as the DWD explains. Scientific studies show that the frequency of such weather phenomena is increasing due to climate change. Regions such as North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, which have often been hit by damaging flood events in recent years, are particularly affected. DWD highlights that it is becoming increasingly likely that new temperature records will be set.

This shows that the coming days will not only bring weather phenomena with heavy rainfall, but also the far-reaching effects of climate change. If you are well prepared, you can get through these uncomfortable days safely.
