In a tranquil health resort in Brandenburg, more precisely in Flecken-Zechlin, the plan for a large refugee accommodation is causing a lot of excitement among the around 700 residents. The SPD district administrator Ralf Reinhardt has decided to convert a former GDR hotel for this purpose. But the citizens are anything but enthusiastic about this suddenly decided measure, which came about without any prior communication with the community. Resident Katrin Dreyer speaks out and describes how concerned she is about the lack of discussion: “Where are we supposed to get the kindergarten places, schools and police presence for so many new residents?”
The situation escalates further when investigative journalist Adrian Garcia-Landa comes across the machinations of a group of convicted businessmen. They appear to have a monopoly on renting refugee homes and funnel significant tax money into dark channels. At the core of their approach is the leasing of real estate, followed by more expensive leasing or purchase at reasonable prices. Mayor Frank-Rudi Schwochow expresses concerns about the establishment of new companies for these questionable businesses and the exorbitant rental prices.
Civil protests and social tensions
The district administrator's plans not only have legal dimensions, but also unsettle local citizens. Schwochow points out that the property is still not finished even after four years and 14 opening dates have already been canceled. In addition, the latest information from the district about possible new dates was no longer communicated. “This is all going against the will of the citizens,” said Schwochow, who compares the entrepreneurs to a syndicate. This leads not only to communal tensions, but also to personal danger for critics who report threats and even tampering with their vehicles.
The discrepancy between the positive promises and reality is remarkable. While the actors in the background look after their financial interests, the question remains as to how the project is compatible with the legitimate concerns of the community. More and more residents are raising their voices: They want to be part of the decision-making process; after all, it's about their neighborhood and their future.
