Car sunk in the lake: accident or intentional act?

On the night of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the peace at Untersee in Kyritz, Ostprignitz-Ruppin district, was suddenly disturbed. An angler who was by the water saw a car roll into the cool water and immediately alerted the rescue workers. Shortly before midnight, the fire brigade and police arrived at the scene of the accident, where the vehicle was floating not far from a jetty, as maz-online.de reported.

The first firefighter did not hesitate and jumped into the water to search for possible occupants of the vehicle. However, after a thorough check, the all-clear was quickly given: There were no people in the car, which was confirmed after the vehicle was recovered. The owner of the vehicle, a 57-year-old, and her husband could not initially be reached. It currently remains unclear whether it was an accident or an intentional act. The police have now started an investigation into the hit and run because three other people at the lake did not notice the incident.

Vehicle recovery and environmental aspects

The fire brigade acted carefully and secured the vehicle with a rope to prevent it from slipping, while at the same time searching the area with flashlights and technical equipment. Fortunately, no environmentally harmful liquids escaped, so the Untersee, also known as Bantikower See, remained unscathed. The greatest depth of the water is at least 20 meters.

The criminal police have taken over the investigation and will clarify the exact circumstances of the incident. Since traffic accidents like this are crucial for further traffic safety, as can be seen in the statistical survey by the Federal Statistical Office, one hopes for meaningful results that not only serve to clarify the incident, but can also support future measures in legislation and traffic education.

The recovery of the vehicle is expected to take place during the day and emergency services will remain vigilant until all safety precautions are in place. It remains to be seen whether the owner of the vehicle classifies this incident as an accident or a mishap.
