Drug trafficking in Fehrbellin: Perpetrator released after verdict!

In an exciting court hearing at the Neuruppin regional court, Stefan W. from Fehrbellin was convicted of drug trafficking. The case is part of a larger discussion about the changing landscape of drug crime in Germany, according to Statista continues to be a serious problem.

Stefan W. was the focus of investigations that began in the summer of 2024. During a search of his apartment on November 27, 2024, officers found around 60 grams of cocaine, more than 16,000 euros in cash and two baseball bats that were viewed as potential weapons. The regional court imposed a prison sentence of three years for armed drug trafficking in a less serious case. Contrary to general expectations, W. was able to leave the courtroom a free man because the arrest warrant was suspended on conditions. He must now report to police twice a week while the cash, believed to be profits from drug sales, has been ordered confiscated. The presiding judge, Philipp Schumacher, made it clear that the baseball bats could not be considered sports equipment.

Fate of the drug trade

Drug crime remains a pressing problem in many German cities. In 2023, more than 347,000 drug-related crime cases were recorded nationwide, representing an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. What is particularly striking is that around 208,000 of these cases involve cannabis, which has been partially legal since April 2024. Nevertheless, drug trafficking, particularly hard drugs, remains a central issue in the criminal underground.

A tragic incident that illustrates the danger of drug trafficking occurred in November 2022 in Oranienburg, where a 24-year-old was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a drug trafficker. The crime followed an argument when the perpetrators refused to pay for cocaine they had ordered. Such acts of violence are not isolated incidents and underline the brutal excesses that drug trafficking can involve, as well as the health and social problems that accompany it.

Stefan W., who has been unemployed since 2017 and lives on citizen's money, is no exception to this dramatic story. He has had odd jobs in the past, but his chronic rheumatic illness has made it difficult to return to the regular job market. Drug policy, as it is currently developing, is becoming more and more of a challenge, not only from a legal perspective, but also from a social perspective.

The overall social situation shows that both drug consumption and the resulting crime rates continue to rise. The number of drug deaths reached around 2,230 in 2023, an alarming sign for society and health policy. In some cities, such as Bremen, the number of drug deaths is highest at almost 5 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Despite some positive developments in the legal framework, the question of how to effectively combat drug trafficking and consumption remains urgent. As Stefan W.'s case shows, it is necessary not only to take strict measures, but also to look at and address the background and social aspects of drug crime.
