More space for doctors: MHB Neuruppin increases study places to 84!

The future of medical education in Brandenburg is facing a growth spurt. From the summer semester of 2026, the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) will expand its range of courses and offer 84 study places for prospective doctors per semester, instead of the previous 69. This project responds to the increasing social need for young medical talent in a region in which almost a third of the 1,700 general practitioners are over 60 years old, reports maz online.

The MHB was founded in 2014 by municipalities and clinics to ensure long-term medical care in Brandenburg. Around 1,100 students are currently studying at the university in various disciplines such as medicine, dentistry and psychotherapy. The path to MHB was initially modest; Back then, it started with just 48 medical students per year. In 2020 the number was doubled to 48 per semester, and in 2023 there was a further increase to 69 per semester. Now there are 84, which underlines the need for more doctors.

New course offerings in addiction support

Another exciting step is the introduction of a part-time master's degree in addiction help, which will also start in summer 2026. This master's degree program will enable up to 20 students to qualify, with a majority of the lectures being offered online. The practical parts take place in Neuruppin and Berlin. This course was designed by Johannes Lindenmeyer, a professor of clinical psychology.

The MHB not only offers an extensive range of courses, but also attaches great importance to the personal selection of students, without any numerus clausus. Instead, personality, motivation and previous professional experience are used, as the university says on its website mhb-fontane.de explained. The integrated and practice-oriented curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with clinical practice, which increases the chances of successfully passing the integrated M1 exam.

Medicine and its importance

Medicine involves much more than just treating illnesses. It is the science of preventing, detecting and treating diseases, injuries and disabilities in both humans and animals. In addition, medicine is practiced by a variety of professions, including doctors and other health professionals, as shown on the information page wikipedia supplemented.

The training in medicine contains scientific subjects as well as clinical content in order to optimally prepare prospective doctors for their future in the healthcare system. This training is particularly relevant given the demographic developments and health care in the region. It remains exciting to see how the Brandenburg Medical School will further develop its role in ensuring patient care.
