Neuruppin starts innovative study: With Dixi against Alzheimer's!

A groundbreaking pilot study on dementia prevention has begun in Neuruppin with the support of a local company and a software company from Dresden. As [maz-online.de]. aims to find out whether short daily online exercises on the computer can improve memory. Over a period of eight weeks, participants complete special exercises five days a week that last between 20 and 30 minutes each day. The exercise is led by a cute dog named “Dixi” and his master “Drachrau”.

The requirements for participation are simple: a Windows PC and a stable internet connection are necessary, while smartphones are excluded due to their small screens. What is particularly noteworthy is that participation in the study is free and the learning games can continue to be used even after the eight weeks. This initiative could potentially help many people, as around 1.8 million people in Germany suffer from Alzheimer's, which is the most common cause of dementia. According to experts, up to 45 percent of all dementia cases could be avoided or delayed.

How does it help against Alzheimer's?

Michael Berndt, who leads the study, is convinced that mental fitness can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. This fits well with the findings presented in a comprehensive analysis of Alzheimer's prevention options. Digital technologies play a key role in measuring cognitive functions and minimizing health risks. This is also supported by pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, which emphasizes the importance of lifestyle interventions and points to the need to develop digital solutions to promote cognitive health awareness.

The challenges in research primarily concern interdisciplinary collaboration between neurology, psychiatry and other areas. Patients also need to develop the ability to improve their health skills and stay motivated. Here, digital technologies, such as apps for smartphones and tablets, can help participants overcome the challenges.

Prevention in practice

In order to raise awareness of the risks of dementia, the German Alzheimer Society (DAlzG) has developed comprehensive educational offers in cooperation with the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG). These offers are aimed, among others, at employees in care facilities, health kiosks and senior centers. The goal is clear: to spread knowledge about dementia and how to prevent it, which is also discussed in a lecture entitled “Stay mentally fit - prevent dementia with 10 measures”, as deutsche-alzheimer.de makes clear.

The lecture includes basic information about the brain as well as practical tips for preventing dementia, and the materials can be requested free of charge by multipliers. Such preventative measures are essential to maintain cognitive function and support patients in their lifestyle choices.

Overall, the new study in Neuruppin shows how cognitive health can be promoted through digital means and a holistic approach - a hope for many who are confronted with Alzheimer's or are interested in prevention.
