Fewer break-ins in Kyritz: Police see first ray of hope in years

In the summer of 2024, the business world in Kyritz made sad headlines. The city was the scene of several store break-ins, which not only affected the businesses affected, but also the entire community. A total of 21 break-ins were reported, including in a café, a bakery, a flower shop and an ice cream parlor. The estimated damage is at least 17,000 euros. In a striking incident, a perpetrator was caught but managed to escape.

The investigation is ongoing and a 20-year-old suspect has already been identified. But since the fall of 2024, the burglaries have become quieter, which may be due to increased police measures. The business break-ins were followed by another worrying trend: 46 car break-ins in the Kyritz, Wusterhausen and Neustadt regions, with an estimated loss of at least 12,000 euros. Fortunately, a suspect linked to similar crimes in the area was caught, resulting in a noticeable reduction in burglaries.

Decrease in crimes

Police reported that the number of thefts in the region decreased compared to 2023. Simple thefts fell from 152 to 94, while shoplifting fell from 61 to 28. The decline is not only a positive sign for citizen safety, but also a rare relief at a time when nationwide crime appears to be trending higher. Around 5.63 million crimes were recorded in Germany in 2022, including around 1.78 million thefts, which increased for the first time since 2015, as Statista documents.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, where Kyritz is located, over 23,500 residential burglaries were recorded in 2022 alone. The clearance rates for residential burglaries are only 16.1% and for vehicle theft are 31.1%. This shows how important any information provided by the local police is and what successes have already been achieved. The same reports also point to a decline in violent crime in Kyritz, with 18 cases of grievous bodily harm, 10 fewer than last year.

Current burglaries and robberies

The most recent crime that called for the attention of local police was a gas station robbery on June 12, 2025. In this incident, an employee was threatened with a weapon, once again reminding citizens of the dangers in everyday life. Although the numbers for some crimes such as domestic violence have fallen from 58 to 35 cases, monitoring crime remains important.

13 reports were registered in schools, including seven physical injuries and one grievous bodily harm. The situation in road traffic was also monitored: 275 traffic accidents were recorded, 59 fewer than in 2023, which is encouraging, at least in terms of accident frequency. The police in Kyritz actually seem to have a good hand at solving and prosecuting crimes, as two out of three property crimes were solved.

Overall, the trend towards a reduction in crime in Kyritz is good news. But police crime statistics show that challenges remain and the community cannot rest on its laurels. Statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office show that violent crime and sexual offenses are increasing. An increased focus on prevention and education remains essential to guarantee the safety of all citizens in Kyritz.
