Pirate playground on Heinrich-Heine-Ufer shines after a stormy renovation!
The pirate playground on Heinrich-Heine-Ufer in Cologne has reopened its doors! After last week's severe storms, which caused some damage, repairs and cleanup work has now been completed. Mayor Michael Müller thanked the three green maintenance companies who were there quickly and with commitment to restore safety. Among other things, three trees fell and large branches had to be removed from the play area. Fortunately, the playground equipment, including the newly renovated pirate ship, remained undamaged.
The city administration already has plans to replace the fallen trees that provided shade with new trees. It is also being examined whether additional sun protection can be installed in the play area to offer the little adventurers even more comfort. The playground is a true paradise for the children, and not only the little pirates but also their parents are happy that everything was completed on time. City of Brandenburg reports on the reopening.
Preparations for the summer season
But it's not just in Cologne that the playgrounds are being worked on. In Amberg, too, the pirate playground on the former state horticultural show site has been made fit for the summer season. The city gardening department carried out extensive work, which not only included intensive cleaning, but also replacing sand and maintaining the play equipment. During the general annual inspection in 2023, significant wear and tear and safety deficiencies were found on four playground equipment, which is why they will now be completely replaced. Among the innovations will be a child-friendly cable ferry that will make playing safer and more varied. The old suspension bridge will be replaced with a modern structure made of steel pipes, while the climbing tower on the island will also be replaced with a new one. The co-designer of the playground, Eckart Brandau, once again contributed creatively and designed a climbing pyramid made of robinia wood that offers several play functions. Mittelbayerische Zeitung has documented the preparations for the summer season.
Safety is a priority
But as beautiful as the new play equipment is, safety is the top priority in all of this work. Maintenance and inspection of playground facilities are critical to safety. Inspections help to assess the current condition and plan necessary maintenance work in a timely manner. These include visual and functional checks as well as comprehensive main inspections. The safety management guidelines, as described in DIN EN 1176-7, provide valuable guidance. Those responsible are required to act immediately if defects are discovered in order to minimize the risk of accidents. Well-managed maintenance includes records of inspections carried out, defects found and actions taken to correct them. BSFH shares important information about playground safety and maintenance.
Overall, these initiatives show how important safety and fun in our playgrounds are. Whether in Cologne or Amberg, the focus is clearly on the quality and safety of the play areas for our children.
