Israel attacks Iran: threat of escalation in the Middle East!

Today, June 18, 2025, the conflict between Israel and Iran dominates the headlines and raises many questions. Israel is pursuing an aggressive strategy to bring about significant change in the Middle East. The target is the Iranian nuclear program as well as the production capacities for missiles and the so-called “Axis of Terror”. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that these attacks are part of a larger plan to eliminate Iran's power.

On June 13, there were several Israeli air strikes that targeted key sites in Iran's nuclear program, including the Natanz facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the attacks, but initially there were no increased radiation levels. However, these attacks had fatal consequences, including the deaths of six key nuclear scientists and senior leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard. Iran's Chief of General Staff Mohammed Bagheri also fell victim to the attacks, providing further fuel for the already raging conflict reports Deutschlandfunk.

Reactions to the attacks are mixed. While US President Donald Trump wants to “resolve the conflict once and for all” without making it clear whether through negotiations or military strikes, the Iranian Foreign Ministry is calling on the UN Security Council. These attacks were viewed by Tehran as a “declaration of war,” which could further escalate the situation. The international community is also concerned: Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil expressed warnings of further escalation, while Qatar and the United Arab Emirates condemned the attack as a clear violation of international law informs Spiegel.

Additional attacks and the dangers to the civilian population

The attacks do not appear to be over as Israel plans to continue the waves of offensive. In this context, a large part of the oil facilities in Iran were also targeted by air strikes. Civilian casualties are a shocking part of the tally, which also includes children, highlighting the disproportionate risk to civilians. Experts also warn that some Iranian nuclear facilities are hidden deep underground, requiring the use of special bunker-buster bombs - this capacity lies solely in the hands of the United States reports the city report.

In the upcoming ZDF program “maybrit illner” on June 19th, viewers can find out more about the background and possible future developments. The experts in the discussion include prominent voices such as Armin Laschet, historian Moshe Zimmermann and Middle East expert Kristin Helberg. In addition, the program is offered barrier-free with subtitles and in German sign language, which makes participation possible for all citizens.

The situation remains tense and the world is watching developments in the Middle East. The coming days could be crucial for the progression of the conflict and stability in the region.
