Michendorf sells town hall: new school for autistic children planned!

The municipality of Michendorf has decided to sell its former administration building at Poststrasse 1 to the Oberlinhaus association. Mayor Claudia Nowka confirmed that this decision was passed unanimously in a non-public meeting of the municipal council in October. With this step, the building, which served as the headquarters of the building and public order office until the new town hall opened in October 2024, will be given a new purpose.

The building is being purchased with a clear usage concept: the plan is to set up a school for children and young people with autism. We rely on close cooperation with existing primary and secondary schools in the Potsdam-Mittelmark region in order to promote inclusion. The Oberlinschule, which is already active in Potsdam and Michendorf, will set up a new location here where a loving and supportive learning environment will be created.

The next steps

In addition to the various purchase offers, a decisive factor in the sale to the Oberlinhaus Association was the planned usage concept. In order to set up the school, the Oberlinhaus Association still needs approval from the Brandenburg Ministry of Education. If this approval is not granted, there is an alternative plan for social education and special education offers for young people with disabilities.

The sale is expected to be formalized by a purchase agreement this year. The implementation of the planned school concept is estimated to take two to five years, as extensive renovation work is necessary on the building, which is in need of renovation and is currently not barrier-free. A key point will be the installation of an elevator to ensure access for everyone.

A step into the future

The basic structure of the administration building should be largely retained, with the former school rooms being restored. This project shows that the community is ready to revitalize old structures while addressing the needs of children and young people with autism. An innovative approach that is intended to create not only a new location for the Oberlinschule, but also space for the development and integration of young people.

The anticipation of this project is understandable, after all it could have a positive influence on the region and benefit many families in Michendorf and the surrounding area in the future. There really is something good in the air here.

We remain curious to see how the plans develop and whether the Oberlinhaus will receive approval to begin work soon.
