Cyclists in Treuenbrietzen: Safe routes required after fatal accident!

In the tranquil community of Lühsdorf, a district of Treuenbrietzen, the need for safer cycle paths has become louder in recent months. Especially after a tragic incident in July 2023, when a cyclist lost his life on the busy L80, the issue of cycling infrastructure is high on the agenda. The accident has galvanized local residents, such as mother-of-three Lisa Märten, who is eagerly calling for better conditions for cycling. “Safe paths must be created for children and adults,” she expressed concern.

The L80 is considered a dangerous route for cyclists, not least because of the high volume of traffic, which in 2021 amounted to around 4,100 vehicles per day, including around 570 trucks. The School Cycle Paths Association has been committed to building a cycle path from Luckenwalde to Buchholz for over ten years, but progress has been slow. The cycle path currently ends abruptly in Frankenfelde, which makes the situation clear for cyclists.

Political measures and future prospects

As a result of the fatal accident and the intervention of Mayor Stefan Scheddin, the project is now moving. The expansion of the cycle path between Frankenfelde and Frankenförde is becoming the focus of planners. The project organization is to be determined in the second half of 2025, while the technical planning is targeted for 2026. What is also exciting is the fact that the section between Frankenfelde and Frankenförde has been included in the urgent need, which gives hope for faster progress.

An important aspect is the consent of all property owners along the L80. Everyone seems to be aware of the need for a safe cycle path - except for one person who could face expropriation in an emergency. The goal is clear: the improvement of the cycle path infrastructure in rural areas should be promoted in order to promote both safety and the use of bicycles.

Cycling is trendy

Efforts to improve the cycle path situation are particularly important at a time when cycling is becoming increasingly popular in Germany and Europe. According to current statistics, over 80 percent of Germans are cyclists, with 17 percent of all journeys being made by bike. At a time when not only are environmental regulations becoming stricter, but the desire for a healthy lifestyle is also growing, it is important to create safe and attractive paths for cyclists.

The many benefits of cycling are undisputed: it promotes health, protects the climate and relieves traffic. The plans for expanding cycle paths and the associated increase in safety are not only a reaction to tragic events, but also a step towards a more sustainable and livable future for all citizens who want to use bicycles as a means of transport.

The measures are urgently needed so that safe cycling will soon be possible for everyone in Lühsdorf. The next steps in the planning could significantly improve the situation for many cyclists and establish the region as a bicycle-friendly place.
