School bus dispute in Bad Belzig: New hope for students!

In Bad Belzig, hopes have risen for around three dozen students who want to go to the Treuenbrietzen comprehensive school in the coming school year. The current timetable for bus route 582 is that the bus leaves Bad Belzig at 6:19 a.m. and arrives in Treuenbrietzen at 7:11 a.m., while classes start at 7:55 a.m. That doesn't seem to work, which has now fueled the discussion about an additional bus trip. MAZ Online reports that Anja Schmollack from the CDU is campaigning for such an additional departure. At the last meeting of the district council, their initiative was approved by the SPD, the Left and the Greens, despite concerns, especially from the chairman, and abstentions from the AfD and FDP.

The Regiobus Potsdam-Mittelmark would be willing to provide a vehicle and a driver, but this would entail additional costs of around 100,000 euros. In this context, Deputy District Administrator Steven Koch expresses concerns about the possible consequences for school transport and the promotion of the Plus bus route. For him, it is important that the railway becomes more flexible in order to ensure punctual connections for the students.

Alternative solutions and challenges

The discussion also included suggestions for unconventional solutions, such as the use of on-call or citizen buses. Reyk Schulz, a knowledgeable citizen, offers an interesting approach, as not all 35 eligible students could fit on the existing bus. This shows once again that the issue of school transport in the region is quite complex and requires different approaches.

The Potsdam-Mittelmark district is not only responsible for school transport, but also reimburses travel costs if these are necessary. Entitlements to school transport are regulated by statutes, which specify exactly whether parents or adult students must contribute to the costs, as can be seen from the information on the district's website: Potsdam-Mittelmark.

In order to apply for school transport or reimbursement of costs, parents or adult students must do so at the school administration office in their place of residence. All you need is a completed application, proof of school attendance and, if relevant, proof of a disability. The regulations for school transport were also determined by the responsible districts and cities on their own responsibility and inform the population via official announcements and on the Internet, as explained on the website of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport: MBJS specialist portal.

600 students from the Potsdam-Mittelmark and Teltow-Fläming region use the school buses, which further increases the challenges in organizing and planning student transport. While some solutions are already being discussed, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop for the students in Bad Belzig and what measures will ultimately be implemented.
