Stahnsdorf is pedaling hard: the fifth city cycling starts!

In the picturesque Stahnsdorf we'll soon be pedaling hard again! This year, the community is taking part in the nationwide “City Cycling” initiative for the fifth time. This campaign has been carried out since 2008 Climate Alliance organized and has the primary goal of motivating citizens and local politicians to cycle and thus actively promote climate protection.

From September 7th to 27th, cyclists can collect their kilometers and set an example for more cycling. Stahnsdorf is part of a community campaign in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, which also includes the neighboring communities of Teltow, Nuthetal, Schwielowsee, Werder (Havel), Brück, Bad Belzig, Wiesenburg/Mark and Treuenbrietzen. During these three weeks, kilometers of cycling routes challenge the participants and the best municipalities are awarded in the categories “Most Bicycle-Active Municipality” and “Most Bicycle-Active Municipal Parliament”.

Take action together

To participate, teams can be founded or existing teams can be joined. Whether for business or pleasure, every route cycled counts! This not only contributes to personal fitness, but also shows that cycling is a popular and environmentally friendly mobility option. At the same time, the community is drawing attention to the need for better cycling infrastructure to make it easier to switch from cars to bikes.

An important instrument for citizen participation is the RADar! platform, through which fellow citizens can report problems such as potholes or confusing traffic routes. The municipality administration is required to take care of the reported concerns. In addition, the CITY CYCLING app is used in this context, which not only supports cycling traffic planning, but also provides insights into improving the flow of cycling traffic through anonymized evaluations from the Technical University of Dresden.

Climate protection through mobility

Participation in “City Cycling” is much more than just an activity – it is part of a larger commitment to climate- and environmentally friendly mobility. The competitive nature motivates many to rethink their own mobility habits. All participants bring the idea of conscious cycling directly into local events and promote contact with the respective local parliaments. We must not forget that some of the most successful initiatives have come about through the long-term improvement of the cycle path network, as politicians test on site where action is needed.

Overall, “city cycling” is valued as a communication, planning and citizen participation tool and has already received awards such as the “Sustainable Energy Europe Award” and the “National Energy Globe Award Germany”. Anyone interested in the campaign can contact André Muno at a.muno@klimabuendnis.org report and receive further information.

Stahnsdorf is going again - join in and set an example for climate protection and better cycling infrastructure! The campaign can also be used to apply for funding for cycling projects, based on the findings of Klimaschutz.de, take place. Let's pedal together!
